The "official" 2011 Fall Dragon Run thread...Oct 6th-9th

The quote is actually, It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

The Blues Brothers.

I stand corrected, did you look that up somewhere? With the Blues Borthers in the bottom it looks like it and if you did its ok, no offense taken:laugh:

***BREAKING NEWS***

Some of you guys aren't going to like this but Eathen is looking at an Integra and looking to drop the price of his SC300 to $7k. Randy and Billy, you guys gotta know someone down there looking for something like this, right?

I had a good time with the years countdown, keeps things interesting, so I'll give the new day/year a go, its goinig to be hard to top 80 but here it goes.....

-The year Hectour was born:crazy:

-The last year for the 6.6 T/A

-The last album AC/DC recorded with Bon Scott...."Highway to Hell"

-Ozzy is officially kicked out of Black Sabbath and replaced with Ronnie James Dio....RIP Dio!

-"The Wall" is released by Pink Floyd...$$$

-"Fair Warning" by Van Halen is released, no sophomore jinx there, huh!

-The Corvette is still slow:nonono:

The year?...............79', 79 more days to go!

BTW, update on the shirts please:shrug:

I typed that there to actually answer the question asked. I own both of the blues brothers movies, i had actually watched the original this weekend. The scene with them driving through lower wacker drive is amazing. I love watching old "car guy movies" you know before CGI took the feel out of those high speed scenes.
That quote is on of my favorites especially since im building a car that will vaguely fit that description.
Best quote though was "Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration, don't fail me now!"

Well I'll say this, I like the F40 over the F50 and Enzo, does that count for anything?! Who cares about the turbo'd being a different size, the newer inline 6 BMW's have that w/o a problem. Its been proven time and time again (also on Top Gear) and even Jeremy said as much, the Porsche is the supercar you can drive day in and day out, practical, reliable and a supercar, sounds like its right up my alley....now I just need the money to buy one!

Eating at the cabins is what I plan on doing for sure. Wake up, hit the shower and make some breakfast and hit the road. We can buy the food at the store across route 68 (across from the Hardee's) and speaking of Hardee's, well, I'd be down for that too, in and out and hit the road there too. We just can't waste all this time waiting around infront of the cabins for people to get up and get going, then hit the restaraunt and wait for our food and then wait for the next group to come in, not to mention its cheaper but more importantly its much, much quicker and gives us more time for the road, the road we've waited to drive for an entire year. The one day I'd be willing to hit the restaraunt is on Sunday morning, when we're on our way home. This brings up another question, one night, are we going to BBQ something? It doesn't have to be fancy, just burgers and brats would be great, maybe Friday night for you guys not going on the Dragon at night time. I know I plan on hitting the Dragon at night again, wouldn't miss it for the world, just looking out for the rest of the group on that one.

No fridges in the Fits, we'll be out carving up the road....all 5 of us, maybe 6, 7 or 8, who knows!
Brent and I are planning on bringing our little Weber grill...so we are in for BBQ!

Yay I was born!

The year for all that....78', 78 more days to go!

You forgot my wife was born. Way more important than how crappy the Corvette was that year. ;)

Sorry, didn't know that Eric, girls don't want you to know their age anyways:shrug:

I know this much, all this upper 90's heat is making me look even further to our trip where it gets no warmer than 80 and even that's a stretch, this has been crazy! I don't know how people deal with going down to the Dragon in the summer monthes, I bet its like this all the time down there:eek:

Speaking of our trip, its never to early to talk about how we're going to do things this year as far as groups. I thought it worked out pretty well last year with what, 2 to 3 different groups going out, I don't think anyone had a problem with that. One thing I'd like though is for everyone to be at the paved meeting spot for a group shot, that other area, although larger is just too bright to take good pics and kinda warm there, compared to the large rock wall and trees where we usually meet up at. I ofcoarse will lead the noob group/slower cars again, no problem. I will also be heading out in the morning with a couple people as well, its something myself and others have wanted to do, so in that case we might just head up to Hardee's for a quick bite or eat in the cabin and hit the road, early. Once we do that we'll end up meeting the rest of the group sometime out there, we all know where we're going now and even if the noobs don't wanna do this, there' s enough people who sleep in a little later that they can go out with, some of the Fit guys/gals have been out there before which is a good thing and I know the the husband/wife team with their Fits are pretty good drivers out there, so they should be good to go:laugh:

The night run is on again and what we ended up doing last year was hangin' out on the Dragon till later and heading towards 411 and heading into town (whatever town that is) and found an awesome authentic Mexican restaraunt and let me tell you, it was AWESOME! The food and service were top notch and we're going back there again. It gives us a chance to eat and let the sun go down and the road to clear itself out. I know some people will chose to go back to the cabins and that's cool, never a set in stone plan with this run anyways, especially with how large the group is now. I really enjoyed the night run last year, alot and its gotta happen every year now for sure. Our group consisted of 4 cars and although I don't mind more cars out there spacing is key for sure, the lead car of the pair must know the road pretty well and have good lighting and the second car needs to be either a little slower or respect the car infront of them, its even more important than during the day, its PITCH BLACK OUT THERE! I bet we double our night run from last year and even though it was my first time out there last year at night, having Hectour infront of me made it that much better. He's a Dragon vet, has a much faster car than I and he knows who's behind him, me and that made it really enjoyable. I got to follow his tailights and actually use his headlights to help me along, all along pushing my Fit about as hard as I could and had the brakes smoking pretty good pulling into a dark and deserted Deals Gap for a cool down! Safety is key at night time too, once we get on the Skyway its my opinion that we should try and stay together a little better and keep an eye out for the last car(s) in the group, the Skyway as you guys know is NO joke, especially at night time, anything can happen.

My car currently has 30k on the clock, so the brakes are still good and the tires have 19k, so by the time the trip happens I should be around 33-34k on the car and about 22-24k on the tires, so I'm still ok there but by the 10th anniversery trip I will have new rotors/pads up front and a new set of tires for sure. I mention this because its so important that the noobs understand how important the tires and brakes are out there, everything is put to the test and this is NOT the place to either cut corners and/or have issues with either of these important items on the car. Vehicle maintence will be brought up again and again as well closer to the Dragon run so the noobs see it and respect this advice, I will also post it more and more on the other forums as well, but the nice thing this year is that most of the noobs have either been out there before or are level headed people, so that really helps out.

On with the countdown........

-Santana releases "Moonflower" (my personal favorite and a deserted island pick for sure!)

-"Downsizing" of Chevrolet's full-sized cars begins with the Caprice/Impala

-Jeff Beck teams up with Ian Hammer (guy who wrote the theme music to "Miami Vice") and releases an awesome live album.

-Star Wars episode IV is released...the rest is history!

-Jimmy Carter becomes president...very forgetful to say the least IMO

When did all this happen you may ask.....1977, we've only got SEVENTY SEVEN MORE DAYS!

Next purchase, roger you should appreciate this.

I plan on getting new breaks. Replacement rotors with some hawk pads or something. Also, hopefully before the dragon i will have my roll bar. Those are two of the major things on the list for things to get before the trip down. Hopefully a new slave cylinder, they are inexpensive and easy to install, i'm pretty sure the one i have is factory. Tires are bran new, have less than 5k on them. And the clutch just rolled over 1k the other day. New water pump was installed over the winter, with a coolant flush. Cooling system works top notch. I will need an oil change in about a month or so (another 1k miles), i'm going to try and stay off from using the car to avoid an oil change before the trip. Oh, and i just ordered some door bars. They should be here soon. This miata will pretty stiff. It may seem like a huge list of stuff to do. But i should get most if not all of it bought, and installed.

I also still need to calculate my highway fuel millage. I need to figure out how much this trip is going to cost me... I don't want to say it, but i have a feeling it may be slightly more than last year. :D

what year is your miata and i can price out some Hawk pads with powerslot rotors (either slotted or premium). Just let me know which Hawk pads you want and ill get you pricing for them.

It's a 94. I was looking at getting the "HP Plus" pads.

PM me if you need to.

Dillon, you'll like the Hawk "street" pads for your car, I had em' on my Mini the last year I had on and on the Dragon they were great. I also added SS lines, something that shouldn't be overlooked, think about it, those stock brake lines are rubber and 17 years old. Looks like Dan is using his connections to hook you up, so that's cool.

I like all the work you've done to the car getting it road worthy, its nice when someone who's only been to the Dragon once not only buys a car for the road but goes out and gets it ready for the run itself, good job, hopefully the noobs see this and read it and heed it!

Since Eathen takes so long to come in here I can tell you that his SC300 has been sold (no kidding:crazy:) and he's stepped back in to a Honda, kinda. He bought an 04' RSX type S yesterday. Its metallic black w/black leather and has 102k on the clock w/ a Comptech cat-back and intake of some type, he didn't really know who's it is. The Honda count is now at 7 and who knows where its going to end:shrug:

Now its been a few days so let's get updated again:

-Last year for the "SD" Trans Am

-Richard Nixon steps down

-Last year for the big block in the Corvette

-Robin Trower releases "Bridge of Sighs"....AWESOME!

-Plymouth brings production of the Cuda' to an end

-Ford introduces the world to the Mustang II...OMG:eek:

-Detroit Lions play their last season at Tiger Stadium

-Al Kaline retires from the Detroit Tigers after 21 seasons, all with the Tigers!

When did all this happen, 1974....74 days to go!

Not more HONDAS!!!! J/K I like Randy's S2K......alright I like most Hondas too.....except for the Fit...alright I kind of like them too.....

I bet it was hot as heck down there Randy!

In a matter of about a week we'll be at the 2 month point, its getting there already. I trust everyone's car is either ready or just about ready:shrug: I'm liking the t-shirt idea more and more, just hope one those sayings makes it to the back of the shirt, makes for a conversation piece for sure:laugh:

We've got a good one coming up now:

-Last year for chrome bumpers both front AND rear on the Corvette

-Final year for the LT-1 engine option in the Corvette

-Deep Purple releases "Machine Head" with the anthem "Smoke on the Water"

-YES releases "Fragile"...."Roundabout"

-Mercedes changes the SL body style which remains for the next 17 years!

All this happened back in 1972....72 more days to go!

What happens when a Fit and Lotus get together on the Dragon?!

What happens when a Fit and Lotus get together on the Dragon?!

it was the fast bit before you actually get to the tight parts. headed from maryville south on 129, past the dam, the bridge and with the lake on the right. FYI the speed limit is 10 mph slower headed south (toward the dragon from maryville) there than it is headed north.... so we were headed thru some of the fastest parts before you get to the slower switchbacks.

the lotus and i came screaming around a long left hand turn and the state trooper came the opposite direction....

sooo, the lotus was in front and motioned for us both to pull over and wrote us both a ticket - 71 in a 40 - ouch....

so lesson learned that i can pass on here is this: dont get caught up with speeding in the wideopen parts. the cops seem to be hanging out toward the north side of the dragon, catching people carrying too much speed in the longer turns... because of all the crashes and deaths up here, the cops have really cracked down on this area, but seem to leave the twisties alone for the most part. the most fun you will have is the switchbacks and really twisty stuff. you can actually go the speed limit in the twists and have a great time.

so when you guys are up here, be very careful for several reasons

^^^^^^THE ABOVE IS A QUOTE FROM A GUY FROM FIT FREAK^^^^^^

This guy is going with us and lives nearby, modded first gen Fit with springs/sway bar/tires & wheels and I thought I'd pass this along so the noobs can see what can happen out there. After seeing what happened last year on Sat its a "wake up call" and has me re-thinking Saturday's activites for sure. This is why IMO the trip out on route 28 on Saturday is something we really need to think about, it was just crazy out there last Saturday. I saw more cops last year on Saturday than in the previous 8 years of going out there, seriously! I'd like some input from everyone on this, let's chime in.
