The "official" 2011 Fall Dragon Run thread...Oct 6th-9th

Saturday, i'm driving towards deals gap like we always do. But instead of going straight, i'm going to make a right turn and drive 28 as far as i think i can go. :)

The dragon on Sat is just a pain, and to be honest, not much fun. Especially when you have big heavy muscle cars and fat Harley riders that don't know how to downshift slowing everyone up.

I bet it was hot as heck down there Randy!

In a matter of about a week we'll be at the 2 month point, its getting there already. I trust everyone's car is either ready or just about ready:shrug: I'm liking the t-shirt idea more and more, just hope one those sayings makes it to the back of the shirt, makes for a conversation piece for sure:laugh:

We were in a historic city at high altitude for a week and it was cool there. We then took a flight to the remote jungles in the north to see the world famous Mayan ruins called Tikal. It was awesome. I saw huge ruins, monkeys, and other cool creatures. It was pretty hot there.

The t-shirt will most likely be one sided. It will get too expensive and time consuming to do a double sided shirt. I am going to use my friend's screen printing setup, so we need to keep this shirt one sided. I will do two sided shirt once I build my own screen printing setup. I could do a double sided one for $20 if I used crap t-shirts, but I am trying to use some nicer quality shirts. It is also hard to keep a super limited run shirt really cheap. We have less than 10 people wanting shirts right now.

it was the fast bit before you actually get to the tight parts. headed from maryville south on 129, past the dam, the bridge and with the lake on the right. FYI the speed limit is 10 mph slower headed south (toward the dragon from maryville) there than it is headed north.... so we were headed thru some of the fastest parts before you get to the slower switchbacks.

the lotus and i came screaming around a long left hand turn and the state trooper came the opposite direction....

sooo, the lotus was in front and motioned for us both to pull over and wrote us both a ticket - 71 in a 40 - ouch....

so lesson learned that i can pass on here is this: dont get caught up with speeding in the wideopen parts. the cops seem to be hanging out toward the north side of the dragon, catching people carrying too much speed in the longer turns... because of all the crashes and deaths up here, the cops have really cracked down on this area, but seem to leave the twisties alone for the most part. the most fun you will have is the switchbacks and really twisty stuff. you can actually go the speed limit in the twists and have a great time.

so when you guys are up here, be very careful for several reasons

^^^^^^THE ABOVE IS A QUOTE FROM A GUY FROM FIT FREAK^^^^^^

This guy is going with us and lives nearby, modded first gen Fit with springs/sway bar/tires & wheels and I thought I'd pass this along so the noobs can see what can happen out there. After seeing what happened last year on Sat its a "wake up call" and has me re-thinking Saturday's activites for sure. This is why IMO the trip out on route 28 on Saturday is something we really need to think about, it was just crazy out there last Saturday. I saw more cops last year on Saturday than in the previous 8 years of going out there, seriously! I'd like some input from everyone on this, let's chime in.

I am fine with exploring other roads on Saturday. The dragon kinda stinks on Saturday. I am surprised the cop gave the fit a ticket for going 71mph. I would have given the fit driver a break out of disbelief that a fit could go that fast on the dragon.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's had enough of the Saturday cops and traffic. Seems like a good time to do some exploring!

Great news! I just picked up a stock '04 RSX Type-S 6-speed. The car has 102,000 on it and is black hawk black pearl. I already bought some mods for the dragon here they are.
Mugen CF hood, Greddy cat back exahust, Strupt header, reactive strut bar, K-series JDM Type-R Integra intake manifold from Japan, Rota torque rims, Exedy stage 1 clutch.

Going to be buying in the next 2 days, 2" lowering springs, and a Type-R wing. Then ill be ready for the dragon!

Dillon is going to have some freaking sweet brakes on his Miata. better not run to close behind him or you might not be able to stop in time!

The car already had the Comptech exhaust, why another exhaust? I don't see rotors and pads on this list Eathen, what's up? If you go to Detroit I can hook you up a deal on tires, give me a call and oh yeah, where's the pics?

Dan, I see you were able to hook Dillon up, good deal but did he get the SS lines too?

Looks like everyone agrees about Saturday so yeah, we head towards the Dragon and make that right turn and go as far as we think we need to, good deal.

Hey Randy, I'm glad you getting us quality t-shirts for sure, how many would we need to have double sided shirts of that quality and keep the price at $20, just curious. Once the t-shirt is ready, I can send you a check or send the money to you via PayPal. Can't wait to see the final design. Can the shirt say GET BENT under the map of our loop?

I updated the list and put my dad and tyler on it.

I didn't get SS lines. 1 i don't feel like bleeding the brakes, and 2 if i get lines, i'll get new calipers. I can't afford all of that right now.

Well if your putting new rotors and pads on, why not bleed the brakes anyways? A bottle of good ATE brake fluid is what......piece of mind, don't you guys agree? Think about like this Dillon, do you know how old that fluid is?........you will when you bleed it out and replace it though. The fluid is working overtime out there, you know that! I understand not being able to drop the $100 on the SS lines for sure, especially after you just bought the 4 new rotors and pads but atleast bleed out the old stuff and put in the good stuff. BTW, what pads did you end up going with again?

Well, we're just about out of another decade and this last year is HUGE:

-On Sept 18th, 1970 James Marshall Hendrix dies at the age of 27, joining Janis Joplin who also died at the age of 27 a couple monthes earlier.

-The PEAK of the muscle car generation, well, of "that" generation anyways:
*Buick GS..."rated" at 370 hp and 510 ft/lbs of torque at 2800 rpm, the highest of any mass produced muscle car
*SS454 Chevelle (LS-6) "rated" at 450 hp and 500 ft/lbs of torque at 3200 rpm
*Both Olds and Pontiac offer 455's "rated" around 360-370 hp and had torque ratings at or above the 500 ft/lb mark

-The small block Chevy was enlarged to 400 cubes but sadly never offered in a "perf" application (that's ok, we knew what to do with it!)

-AMC comes out with the largest s/b engine, the 401

-Ford ends production of the 429 Hemi in the Mustang after only 2 years of production....CHA-CHING!

-As the decade in brought in, Jimi Hendrix, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles play the Filmore in NY which is recorded and released under the name "Band of Gypsy's" an IMO the greatest recorded album in the history of mankind!

-The most important heavy metal album is recorded for 900 lbs in less than 2 days total by Ozzy Osbourne, Toni Iommi, "Geezer" Butler and Bill Ward and they change their name from Earth to BLACK SABBATH and release the self titled album and start the whole metal scene, period!

-Led Zeppelin releases Led Zeppelin III and go a completely different direction from their first two releases but amongst the songs is "Since I've been loving you" my personal Zep favorite

-First year for the 454 BB in the Corvette

-Last year for GM engines running on "regular" gas...no more Led, urr, lead:troutslap:

-Last and certainly least, yours truely was born on Wed, February 4th @6:06 p.m. in Detroit city.

All these events happened in 1970, 70 more days to go and soon we'll be in "peace and love" generation, get out the bell bottoms and tie dye....oh wait, that came around again already:shrug:

Hawk HPS pads.

If i come up with money before the trip i'll buy new lines and rotors. Only if i do that i'll bleed them. I know the fluid is good, no air is in the lines, and it doesn't leak out like it does on the GA. I'll be fine.

new rotors, pads, and rear calipers for me. i will probaly just use what i can get at the parts store. 240 brake parts are stupid expensive
