I used a nice electric die grinder... think of it as a beefy die grinder having the right bit is a must anything else and you will get beaten by the snail. again the right bit in a rechargeable drill (18 volt dewalt) was okay but definately slower....

Good luck. glad to hear you are swapping out for a newer engine....

some guy on CL is selling a 98 v6 auto contour with an 00 3L motor.... a failed 3L swap... man if he only knew....

I'm glad too, I'm picking it up friday morning from LKQ in LA. its gonna cost me another $125 bones but much cheaper and easier than spending the $400+ for a electric water pump. ok cool I'll check out the electric die grinder hopefully they are not too expensive. and of course the right bit!

FWIW a real good one is the makita. Runs about $100. You can get a cheap knock off from Harbour Freight . Do a search on porting gt40p heads. They go to a Ford 302 but you will find some real good info there. Real good. Thats where I started out my experience with porting heads. They will tell you how to make a real inexpensive speed selector for a die grinder. you don't want to use a max speed. Brian..................

By the way Purdysvt, thanks fo the part. Don't know how I found your house. I looked up when I was stopped at the light and your street/ house was right in front of me. Wasn't too bad of a ride home either.

I'll take my electric Makita over an air die grinder any day. I used to use my air grinder but I really like the makita.
i use it all the time. For all kinds of things. The GEO 600 model.

Brian..........................

dang I just bought a pneumatic die grinder too! it was cheap, but i'm really liking the idea of controllable speed, I don't think it'll be easy with a pneumatic one. well its not too late to buy an electric one. I bought the pneumatic for 15 bucks. and I haven't used it yet. I guess I can return it.
good info guys!

FWIW I know that you can find a cheap copy of it on ebay or harbour freight for around $35.00.
I have been real happy with the Makita. I got mine from Granger.
Did you look up how to make the variable speed box? Very simple using a rotary fan variable speed control. Brian..........................

well I just realized something. this 02 motor doesn't have the COP, so now i'm thinking LKQ gave me the wrong engine. it was tagged as a 02 but i'm thinking its an older motor. now I'm confused. cause the 00 engine I returned had COP but now this 02 doesn't. did the ignition vary on certain years or am i hosed again with the wrong engine, cause if I recall the bell housing is different on the older engines.

I'm not sure how your 00 had COP. All the 01-03 Taurus/Sable motors I've picked up have had normal wires and a coil pack. The 04-05 Taurus/Sable have COP.

well I started the porting finally its taking some time, but its my first time.
what the deal with the black box in between the heads? mine is an 02 3l motor and I thought I've read somewere that I don't have to swap it out with my 2.5 motor beacuse the "older 3L" have the same set up and the newer 03-05 have a different PCV system. is this true?

Only if you are going full 3L as the newer cam covers have the pcv valve in the cover. if you are going ported you need to swap that box over.... its not too bad

I didn't need to swap it on my 03 sable engine, I just swapped the hoses. Its hard to get out if you don't take off the heads.

as is the passenger side motor mount that you need to transfer to the taurus/sable motor or did you buy a cougar one?

it is not bad you just have to bend the four little pieces of metal that support the basket that protrudes into the engine and then you can slide it between the heads. where else do you put the pcv valve on a ported 3L if you don't have that box?

I had the heads off so I was all over the motor mount, but I forgot about the box until I'd torqued the head bolts.

My engine came with an almost identical box is what I'm saying, it just had a different shaped hose attached. All I did was pull the hose off the 2.5 and put it on the box that was already there.

well I'll check it mine out when I get my motor pulled out. that would be cool if its similar. I'm almost done porting, I was using a drill but it was slow then I used a pneumatic die grinder and holy monkeys it was so quick! however too fast and I nearly destroyed one of the ports. the plate took a minor beating so I went back the to drill. the rest of the ports are fine just gotta do some minor touch ups to the ports and take out that bushing in the back. what method did you guys use to pull out that bushing? I was thinking of cutting into it with a dremel and then take a hammer and collapse it.

Thats What you should do just swap the hose to the EGR.

I've seen a few that had COP. There was a thread in pics & vids a while back where some guy had a beater/DD Sable i think it was an 01 & it had COP.
