tuning?s

well thats what i need it needs to be leaned out. it does have an A/F ratio gauge but it just bonces back & forth so it is no use now. i was just thinking doing a tune up b4. i was told i need to get it running as best i could b4 i get the tune done

I would Do the Plugs for tuning but everything else described sounds like it will get fixed with the tune....I was told My car has a tune on it but i dont think he left it on there as My car cuts off randomly. and if it does have a tune it isnt the greatest(Mail Order from what previous Owner Said) I believe I am running rich as he put 24lb injectors in the car.

I would wait until after the tune to replace the O2s, I believe that running rich tends to kill them.
Your AFR is probably a narrow band - useless. But if the sensor was installed in the right spot you might be able to use it for the wideband sensor the tuner is going to want to install.

NO NO NO. i would change the o2's right before the tune. even 1000 miles wont kill them. piont is: if they are flaky it will throw the whole tune off. (mine had 106k miles on it and they were flaky i think. but if you think yours are good you dont have to do it but its assurance)

ya i would change them just b4 i get the tune(within a few days). so basically its all gonna b done @ the same time. my car has about 117k on the body & about 70 on the 03 taurus motor. so i figured they were due for a change anyways.

I was Referred to Pops Racing in NY, he has Experience with the Svt Contours and I called him and Spoke to him too, really kool guy, travels everywhere to tune and If I go that route he will Come to NC to tune My car as he travels all over frequently...It could be he Come to IL and you could Coordinate with him. Just a Thought

im looking @ Streamline Performance. they are a local shop that does all the tuning & such. ive heard from a few that they had there CSVTs done there. so i figure they have some knowledge of it.

U guys are u funny. Just in case u didnt know, the biggest difference between the tuner who mail orders u a tune & the one that sits in the car is manipulation of the XCAL ITSELF. Once the mail order tuner gets it as close as physically possible considering the distance, the xcal then takes over at that point. U can richen or lean out, Add or pull timing, etc. Joey # npg sent me a mail order tune. After a few datalogging sessions, we were done. Took the car for a dyno run and got 325whp @ 11psi. A/F 11.6 11.9. I absolutely luv my xcal2. I change stuff all the time. That being said, i spoke to joey recently & he told me he doesn't personally do the tunes anymore. He directs all his tuning jobs to someone else. Joey vouches for him tho FWIW...

ya i talked to straightline the other day. going to go there in about 2 weeks & finally get her tuned. doin a naturally aspirated tune. i dont know much about it but the guy said i can be there with them while they do everything & go thru it with me so i understand whats going on & whats being done. the guy sounded really kool. i cant wait, i sure hope this will solve some of my problems. i should be able to notice a difference with it done rite.

well talked to Strightline again today, got my appt for wed. to get her tuned. cant wait. i hope she drives better & save me some $ on gas now

It is entirely possible to get a high quality mail order tune. If your car is functioning properly, has a wideband installed, and is just in need of tuning....you can certainly have a tune done via e-mail. Two things are critical, clean datalogs and an experienced tuner. With those things, you can have virtually as much success as you would on a dyno. Virtually everything you could feel/see in person will show up in the datalogs in some way. A/F changes, tming changes, load, etc.

I believe the common issue had around here with mail order tunes is underlying issues that prevent the tuning process from working. IE faulty O2s, Vac leaks, ignition issues, etc. Those things make the datalogs the tuner is using unreliable.

To put it another way, I have never heard of someone tuning a relatively new, stock vehicle via e-mail and having issues. It's almost always somebody with a hand-me-down 3L swap, hackjob, or million mile car that runs poorly and things a tune will be a cure-all.
