Hey guys I'm trying to replace the starter on my tour but I can't find the bolts to get it off. I've found out everything I need to do but I can't find the bolts. I know its a PITA but if anyone has pictures or anything that would help me a TON. I've tried feeling around by the starter. I've felt two bolts that could be the front bolt. One on the motor and the other down on the transmission. The back bolt I can't find at all which is surprising because everyone says that is the easier of the two.

I really don't want to pull the fuel lines or UIM or coolent lines off. Right now I know I need a 3" extention a swivel and two 6" extensions (I have a 1 foot so hopefully that will work) Now for that would it go from the back starter bolt 3" extention swivel then lastly the foot extension? Am I doing this correctly?

Anyways if anyone could help me out I would really apprieciate it. Thanks!

starter is simple, there are only 2 13 mm bolts one on each side of the starter. pull your intake off. one bolt you can get with a ratchet the other get with a wrench. then pry it up off the dowels. you will need a 10 mm socket for the wires as well. only takes a few minutes:shrug:

I understand that I just can't find where the bolts are exactly. It took me at least twenty minutes to find the starter. I don't know if I'm just dumb or what is wrong but I'm having a really hard time.

i got the back bolt. The front one sucks. Any tips on how to get that out with a 13mm open end wrench?

use the closed end and tap the wrench with a hammer it will crack lose or just man up and muscle that :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: lose, they are only knuckles they will grow back i promise lol

lol funny pics pointing to the bolts. disconnect the battery, its in the front right of the car if your looking FROM the front. just messing with ya!

Alright all the bolts are out now to figure out a way to get this thing out from there lol. theres a big loom of wires that goes through the solinoid and the wires from the solinoid to the battery post. wtf

i've just been removing my starter and i found the bolts to be 1/2" A/F not 13mm... anyone else ? The front bolt's is a real PITA to get at. I took one of my old 1/2" spanners and bent it at about 45*, this allowed me to get the spanner on straight and turn it without fouling anything. Once i had cracked it loose i used a 13mm because the oversized spanner gave me some wiggle room.... hope this helps someone who's struggling.

Yeah the front one is a pain...and getting it to wiggle out is a little as well because of the coolant lines.

..i ended up taking the water pump off, the coolant temp. sensor, battery and intake. I'm gonna put the metal impellar on since i have that stripped...can't remember which color impellar had the problem now... since from here on in i'm adding power, i'm taking no chances ..G.

13mm is 1/2" essentially. It is 13mm though as all/most of the fasteners on contours are metric.

ok; after an almighty struggle with the clutch pipe, i got the starter out.
I've stripped it down and found why it needed clubbing with a piece of wood every time i wanted to start the car.
Here's the thing; now it is stripped down, it seems like it would be much easier to install it partially built. Once the body is bolted in, i'm gonna try attaching the windings. It may have been easier to get out, if i had broken it down first ...i'll let you know how it goes, photo's taken for those interested

I have had hundreds of starters apart during my auto tech career. I would not even dream of assembling it on the car. Before you reinstall it, clean up the guide pins and the pilot holes they go into and it should go back together pretty easy. Don't forget part of the earlier advice. Remove the upper intake manifold. It comes off very easy, and gives you much better access.
