Ok, so my 96' SE 3.0L project has been put on hold. Seems I don't really have or can't justify the cash going into this car right now. (Engine is up for sale in the classifieds).
I have a few engines lying around and the gears in my head started turning today. (stock 2.5L, bad rod knock, 98 SVT high mileage 2.5, and lastly a 2006 Escape that I used the oil pan off of).
I think the Escape engine has a bad head gasket. 29K miles with sludge for oil. (Guy pulled it, he thought stuck lifter, blowing smoke bad, no power at all.)
If I put the good 04' Taurus 3.0L engine in the car I would need a tune and fuel rail conversion, among a few other things. Thats adding up for a non-SVT car.
Getting to the point- if I put the SVT heads and cams on the Escape engine with the stock 17# injectors would it run ok? How about if I just used the stock 2.5L heads/cams with the 17# injectors?
I could use either the stock intake or a SVT intake setup.
One other possibility would be port matching the 3.0 heads to a 2.5 intake and use the 17# injectors. Heck, I've got the 3 pk of buzinski plates.
Just trying to avoid the cost of a tune and the 3.0. Cash has gotten tight. I've got a lot in the 3.0 I have. Hoping to sell.

I could do any one of these combinations for real cheap and get this SE on the road. I was just building the car for the fun of driving it in the summer. Not really trying to win a race, not that that would be bad.
One possibility was getting a new crank from Rockauto. $170 with all the bearings. That might get me back on the road.
Anyone got some good input reguarding the use of the 17# injectors with the afore mentioned combos?

17lb injectors will NOT produce enough fuel delivery for the 3.0L..It's been proven.

It isn't as much as the intakes as it is the liters... that the injectors are feeding.

17 lb injectors have been used.. SicSe had his 3.0L with se heads se lim and taurus upper intake. He used the se pcm with is 17lb injectors but was getting problem with starvation and erratic timing due to his se pcm not making adjustments on his upper rpms.

19lb injectors technically barley feed the 3.0L. IN some cases people have seen
them work with their setups for 220whp and no fuel problems came from it. But thats running them at 90%+ duty cycle which of course in the long run would wear out real quickly.

Your just gonna have to bite the bullet and take the chance.....or just opt for a pcm/injector upgrade...or rebuild the 3L

Oh, I forgot to mention. 17# injectors will give you driveability but will not support 4,500+ RPM driving without a nice BOOM to ruin your new 3L. You can lean out the motor on the top end very easily. I still have my 17# injectors in but I have 19# SVT injectors, LIM, and fuel rail ready to go in my setup.

well at least the 17s and a ported 3L would get you going cheeply but as they say no high RPMs and you would want to save up for a tune and larger injectors which would be easy to add later.....

Dude go for it get it done and going...... either fix the head gaskets on the Escape or use the taurus....

oh yeah and the 05 escape that I picked up had the same problems as your 06 escape :nonono:

yeah i honestly think that my SVT #19 injectors are even too small for my setup i believe, on my n/a 3L. at least go with 19's

Been so busy this thread slipped by me. Well I got the 2.5 apart, # 5 spun the bearing. I am looking at a 2.5 with 75k miles on it. Pondering it. I would probable replace the lower end bearings if I took that small plunge.

As I said, its a lot of $$ to actually get the 3.0 in and running. Yea I know, quite being a cheap ass. Ah, the joy of being married.

Couple hundred bucks and the car could be on the road with the 2.5 though.
Seeing as this isn't a SVT I am pondering the 2.5.

SVT is still in the future though. Soon as I come across a good deal on one.
One more thing though, I could put the uim,lim and tb from a parts svt 2.5 that I have. That would be a little plus.
Did I mention the joy of being married? Brian.......

dude did you see the low mileage 2.5 on craigslist? $200 for a motor with 50k

good luck and yeah you can stuff the SVT stuff on a stock 2.5 but you need the svt throttle cable and cruise cable and bracket if you are using the SVT TB

quoted for truth. I also drove around with 17lb injectors in my 3L for about a month before I was able to procure 19lb injectors, rail, LIM, etc. MUST keep it under 4500RPMs.... which is hard to do when you have the extra horsepowers

Soo...ahhhh....what does it mean if I've been driving the hell out of my 3L Cougar for the past year with 17lb injectors??? I had been planning on upgrading to the 19's when I get a tune done, but had nooo idea the 17's were supposed to be That incompatible. yikes.

I would upgrade soon and for being in the safe zone stay below 5k for sure but 4,500 for peace of mind ;)

IT would cause....lean conditions allowing a hotter spark which would start to put a hole at the top of your piston

Also detonation would occur....if the explosion was too lean and you would hear a loud pinging noise while you drive.:blackeye:

In her defense, her car had no mufflers for a while, so I doubt she could have heard the pinging.
