As a 10 year SVTC owner, I don't see people's curiosity about the car having anything to do with jealousy.
The SVTC is visually different, when I first got it, some asked if it was a BMW 3 series. It's a nice looking car, at least mine is. I've taken good care of it; people apparently appreciate its appearance; and many outright strangers have said so to me.
No one I've encountered has thought it was an Escort, or a Taurus with a body kit. Most are surprised to hear that I bought the car exactly the way it appears from Ford Motor Company, and that it's a nice little 3000 pound sedan with 200 HP and some suspension and brake bits from Ford's European parts bins. Nobody has ever dissed the car, in fact, they seem to genuinely appreciate that it's a rarity, and that it's a fun to drive car.
For every nice condition SVTC I see, I see one that is a used-up rolling wreck, or one sporting a shopping-cart ricer rear wing, or one that's lowered to the point of dragging the pavement. Perhaps I'm being judgmental, but none of the latter is my cup of tea.
I really wish little kids would stop buying SVTs.
Well, that isn't going to stop happening. I also own an '89 Taurus SHO, and those have also fallen victim to the same phenomenon due to rapidly declining value, so I don't see the ownership demographics changing anytime soon. As the old saying goes: If rape is inevitable, best to lay back and enjoy it...
