I'm about to do a bunch of work on my SVT and I just want to be sure that the motor I'm about to work on is fine. I have no reason to think I have a spun bearing but it's something I want to be sure of thats all. I feel it runs pretty good but it is a new car to me and I just want to double check with all this oil starvation stuff I've read about.

So, I know rod knock is a knocking sound thats very audible and increases with RPM. But what does a spun bearing sound like? Where is the noise most heard at, near the oil pan? Does the sound change with rpm, like if I were to rev the engine while sitting idle does it increase in sound and intensity? Are there any other symptoms of a spun bearing other than sound?

I'm probably just being paranoid but...

Thanks

I think some have described it like a sound of a playing card hitting the spokes of a bicycle wheel. There were some sound clips posted previously in the old forums.

To avert the oil starvation issue, put in half quart above the max line for oil (this means 6 to 6.3 quarts during an oil and filter change). Check oil level often (I check very other gas fill up). And if you smell burning oil while driving, don't ignore it. It could be as simple as a loose oil filter (happens very often) with oil dripping on the exhaust manifold or Y-pipe.

ok, so not a tick, not a knock, something kinda in between maybe?

yeah, I read to run at least 6qts and thats what I planned. In the stuff I will be doing I was going to be removing the oil pan (gasket) so I decided to replace the oil pan with the updated oil pan since I read that helps as well.

The car runs fine and I don't smell oil and the exhaust isn't real thick or oily smelling that I can tell. The exhaust tips are clean as well, no deposits of any kind on the inside. As I noted in another thread the exhaust was more visible during start up, but went away as it warmed up. Then as the fans would turn on the exhaust would become even less visible but as the fans turned off the exhaust would become a bit more visible but nothing crazy.

I let it run for about an hour a week or so ago just to see how it ran. I haven't driven it in 2 months since I've been busy with moving. Plus I bought this just before moving so I've only driven it 300 miles since I got it.

They are tricky.
I had a spun bearing but we swore up and down that is was something in the top end, until it was professionally diagnosed.

It really sounded like a dropped valve.

yeah, I did but couldn't listen to it.

Dont know why I didn't think to earlier but this time I downloaded it and I could view it just fine.
