Things to do in PA

My g/f and I will be flying to Harrisburg the last few days of June and will be leaving on July 3rd. We're visiting friends in Williamsport, but we will probably have a few days where we're on our own with a rental car w/ unlimited mileage. I've already looked into Hershey and the resorts are pretty pricey as are many of the hotels. What else would you PA residents recommend within a reasonable drive from Harrisburg or Williamsport?
 
Come visit me here in Amish country. :D

You're guaranteed to see a few horse and buggy headed to church on Sunday morning. :shrug:
 
If you were ever thinking of killing yourself, Pennsylvania is the place to do it. There's no distractions or excitement in this :censored::censored::censored::censored:hole.

You get to sample the Yuengling after the tour too... three cups, chose three of the six different types. No worries, they have birch beer for your GF. :)
The lady that did the tour was pretty fiery, we had a good time.
We picked up a Yuengling sign for Pud when we were there.

I'm thinking that's where our friend goes. She's working on a postgraduate degree, but all I know is she's said it's a dinky little college town with absolutely nothing to do in, which is why she wants us to come and visit them.

She doesn't drink, but she is totally into the science of making beer and wine because she's a chemistry graduate student, so she'll probably like the tour. Anyone know of any really good vineyards?

I kinda knew about the HD plant in PA (I believe they're thinking of closing it down temporarily, actually) but Milwaukee has HD stuff coming out the ears including a couple plants, the HQ, and the new museum; none of which I've been to yet. So, I think it's like sacrilege or something if I tour HD in another state first.

Is there anything interesting in the Amish areas? In Wisconsin the Amish areas consist almost entirely of furniture stores (which are just farmers selling furniture from their barns) and cheese stores. Since PA is the Amish capital of the US you'd think they'd have a theme park or some... oh, wait, nevermind.

You can skip the beer/birch beer at the end of the tour.
It's a pretty cool tour. It's best to go early, you can see the beer in the "vats" and then watch them bottle it. Go early.

No, go to the HD plant in PA first. LOL! Then you will be inspired to go to the one in your area which is probably better than the one in York. I had a good time but being short, the rude taller people liked to push their way in front so I kinda lagged back so I could catch up on what I was missing.
Yes, they are thinking of closing the York facility temporarily.

Amish Country... there are lots of furniture stores, craft/quilt places and restaurants, basically stuff that you already know about.

There is a winery, a few of the actually. I'll post the links in a bit.
 
Clover Hill Winery (the main location in Breinigsville) is close to Christine, Allen, and myself and offers some pretty nice tours.

Penn college is a boring college town. All there is to do is to get hammered. You can go gamble in the poconos. Water park out there too. Pitt is a bit of a drive
 
Any suggestions for areas we need to avoid when booking a hotel in Harrisburg? Or is it like our state capitol (Madison) where there's really no bad parts of town?
 
stay out of downtown Harrisburg...any of the numbered streets, like the Crowne Plaza...

since you're in Harrisburg, check out Bubbe's Brewery and their catacombs...

We aren't that lucky, we have many bad parts of town in PA.
