The Great AR Question

So on saturday I asked for and got a very qualified opinion (firearms instructor and overall generally great guy named ____ ___________ - not written to protect his ID) on owning a battle rifle (assault rifle). What it came down to was that in our current geopolitical and logistics world the best gun to get is an AR series carbine. This is due to many many factors (my "lesson" was over 1.5 hours long) that we wont really go into unless they are specific questions.

So - I would like to know peoples opinion on an AR.

My frontrunner right now is an M4A3 with the following "options:"
Midlength gas system
16" government profile barrel
Solid Stock to start

Keep in mind that for me it is a casual use and "plinking" gun that I would be able to use and have fun with. I really like the fact that Bushmasters have chrome lined barrels and that appeals to my longevity needs. I know that my groupings will be off compared to say a Rockriver barrel but 1.5 vs 1" out of a 16" carbine doesnt bother me in the least. Weight bothers me (hence gov profile) and the ability to change to optics (I can get them uber cheap through the aboved named ___) instead of iron sights leads me to an A3. I am looking at a 16" because of the obvious ability to weild in a closer enviroment that a 20 or 24" just wont work in. No I dont see myself clearing rooms with my AR - but a 16" will do everything a 20" will do on the range (realistically) but a 20" will not do a 16" when it comes to storage and transport and maneuverability. Also 16" will still be long enough to avoid a SBR permit even with a collapsed stock (possible later addition).

So - Opinions from those who own AR's or who hate AR's - please give them!

You seem to have a good bead on things with them. I'd personally go with a flat top style over the H-bar, and optics for whatever you intend to pump rounds into. Maybe a specific style would be in the "happy median" area and allow multi-tasking for you.

The 16" barrel is perfectly fine. The great thing about the AR's is that you can always build an upper for any given task. Most people that I know who have an AR, have atleast 2 uppers ready to play with. So many mods, the sky is the limit with these babies :)

kinda what I was thinking.

I know there are good AK's around - but the "good" ones are as expensive as the AR's. I can get all sorts of mods and magazines and optics at unbelieveable prices through my old work - and they dont have anything for AK's . . .

Well, if you are shopping for one, get it soon. I've heard of the assault weapons ban is trying to get through congress again. Same as before with a few loop holes closed.

I have one, my dad has one, my friend has 2 of them (one .223, and one 9mm). They are great rifles. I've got a .22LR upper on mine so it's uber cheap to shoot. But I'm in the market for a .223 upper right now. Probably, the same M4A3, 16". I'd recommend spending the few extra bucks to get the chrome bolt. It supposed to be more reliable.

Im more worried about Greenland to tell you the truth . . .

That's true, I'm not sure they have guns in Canada. I've got a 12 guage with hollow point slugs. If I miss, I'm sure the noise will do enough to scare someone off. If I hit, I'll be cleaning up for a while.
