Pleased with mpg

on my trip home with the newly installed 3l in the svt and being quite spirited with my new toy lol I got 23mpg on mostly hwy driving at an 80mph avg and the car also needs a tune. I was quite impressed!
 
Just changed the air filter and cleaned the MAF sensor and the TB. Mileage went up from a consistent recent average of about 20mpg to 21.7mpg on the same commute. Gotta change those spark plugs next.

can only afford to fill up with 87... ....uses only about 10 gallons.

That's only <$2.00 IF it was a 0.20/gal difference from premium. For the same $2.00 savings you could increase your tire pressures to improve mileage and STILL see the SAME MILEAGE AS WITH 87 (or even better, since it is TUNED for premium)
 
I've tried both premium and regular fuels and they both had the same mileage. Yeah, the premium "seems" to run better, but it could all be in my head. That is $2 that I really need in my pocket rather than in my tank as well! In CT, you can get a ticket and fined for having overinflated tires; that and higher than recommended pressures become dangerous and will wear much faster than a properly inflated tire.

$2 isnt much to ensure your engine wont detonate and damage itself. And you will see better mileage with the correct fuel so I'm guessing you took a different route or drove a little differently to get the same numbers. As for a ticket for having your tires too inflated I think you're taking it to the extreme. Running your tires at 35 or 36 wont wear out your tires any faster but in theory helps with mileage a tad.
 
I'm really pleased with my gas mileage even considering I just rolled 154k. I got (even though i cut off pulling in, and changed the fuel filter after) about 435 off a full tank of 93. I baby my car.

That's impressive. I got 360 miles out of a recent tank and could have gone further as the needle was showing 1/8 tank still remaining when I filled it back up. I believe I could have easily hit 400 miles had I pushed it, but doubt I could have hit 435.
 
I wish i could get 30 mpg. I got 26 once with 3 people in the car and driving 75. When im not driving on the freeway i get 20 or lower.
 
I 've taken to coasting down long hills in neutral, but haven't noticed my overall mpg going up.

If it is a long big hill, just engine brake down it to shut off your injectors instead of idling. I engine brake all the time to save gas and it really makes a difference. When idling in neutral down a large hill or moutain you are still sipping a good bit of gas and possibly having to ride the brakes as well. Instead, just throw it in gear and engine brake so your injectors stop spraying all together!
 
Out of curiosity, on cars that do shut off fuel injection during engine braking above a certain RPM, do the cylinders continue to receive spark?

I don't see why they wouldn't. And it is just the interia of the car turning the motor over that is keeping it alive when engine breaking so zero fuel should be used as I understand it. I've never read up on it though. :shrug: :)
 
My car is a 2000 SVT with 98,000 miles. I was getting around 22-23 mpg recently, my commute is 120 miles roundtrip. I bought a new scanguage and I got 33 mpg on my last tank. I slowed down to 65 on the freeway, I only cycle the A/C when it gets really hot, and I coast whenever I can.

On a big long downhill, I get over 300 mpg when I shift into neutral, compared to about 80 or 90 mpg when I leave it in gear.
