New England day trips / things to do?

so I'm on vacation Nov 1 through 11th. I already have local (Boston, Worcester and NY) commitments over both weekends, voting is on the 4th, and I blew some cash on a new computer and scanner, so long-distance traveling is out.

I'm already planning on the following --
- Twin Mountain, NH
- the Cape
- Boston (as a tourist for once .. also travel the Cambridge bike trail)

Any other suggestions for other decent day trips? Anywhere as far as NY/PA is cool. Ideas for things to do are welcome as well, lol. I wish I had tools, space, and broken things to fix. Otherwise I'll spend the time reorganizing my apartment, doing document imaging, and just moping around.
 
I guess it's kind of past peak season for leaves. Spend a day in New York City? Grab some food, see some sights, maybe go see a show.
 
always have the mystic area of CT. there is the aquarium, seaport, mystic pizza. if you head over to New London you can tour the Nautilus at the sub base. IN essex there is the stream train/steam boat ride which is fun.

I forget where but in MA there is a place that makes hand blow glass items. might be a good stop along the way somewhere else.

You could always head out to Newport. Should still be nice out there. And per Greg stop at the Brick Allie Pub if you do.

What anout Mount Washington? Although the top is most likely already under snow or something. The area around there is very nice as I recall.

What about going to Bar Harbor. I remember that as a great area also.

Mystic is gorgeous. Also, don;t forget Niantic. My Mom grew up there, so I'll tlk to her baout what to do. It's just a nice little small town near Mystic with a beautiful downtown and nice beach.

There's also a GREAT place to dispose of old struts and such. I tink it's this small town called Colchester, or something. It's right on the way to Niantic:laugh:
 
The Flume and the Basin are fun to go see. You can make it part of your Twin Mountain trip.
Bundle up because the weather is getting cooler.

If you go down to Mystic, you might as well stop off at one of the casinos (Mohegan or Foxwoods) for a couple hours just to check them out, maybe drop a few coins in the slot machines or something.
Mohegan has a lot more Native American themed decor, which is neat to see. Plus it has that shopping mall area.
Foxwoods is more fun for all around gambling, IMO. They have a lot of fun table games beyond the usual poker and blackjack tables.

What part of the Cape do you plan on visiting?

and I wouldn't worry about Colchester. you can't see anything from the highway so there must not be anything important in the area :P

For Boston:
Sam Adams brewery tour (currently under renovation but the tasting part is still there)
Freedom trail / pub-crawl (we did both at the same time ;))

Ok. How about taking yourself out to lunch at Holiday's Bar and Grill in Auburn, MA. They often have great daily specials.

Done the App Gap lately? Vermont 17 is a fun ride.

I agree with Kim about the Flume. Good stuff.

Here's a great route (and it works in the Twin Mountain trip):

Take I-91 north along the Connecticut River Valley to Rte. 135. This runs through Littleton and Lancaster, NH, and is a terrific drive. What a great road. From there, you can catch Rte. 2 and run that to 115, which will bring you right into Rte. 3 and then Twin Mountain. After that, pick up 302. That will lead you east to Rte. 16. On the right, just before you hit Rte. 16 is the Red Parka Pub. If it's after three, stop in for a bite at the bar and a beer in a mason jar. I've recommended this place on here before -- it's a good time. You can find you way back home by striking back out on 16 south.
 
I'd echo Newport, RI. Lots of scenics there, especially along the old mansion walk. Plus the old America's Cup history from back in the day if you ever followed sailing. Plus downtown is a great area to hang out and do a little browsing. Spent many, many months there while in the Navy..... great place.

I know it's past peak for Foliage (which is why this is a good time to do this) but why not hit the Mohawk Trail or the Vermont Country Store?? Yeah, they're a little out of the way....that being said, I'm taking a Leave day to take my g/f and her kids up to VT...
 
great suggestions thanks guys!! now I'm wishing the vacation was longer to do them all.
Cape was just an idea i have, I've never been on the tip. Just a drive and back.

Definitely too cold for beaches right now, but maybe you could do a long drive along the coast, stopping only for food, gas, wee-wee and a few pics.

Also, on the link I posted earlier, I noticed there was a lighthouse cruise. Perhaps you can do your own modified version of that and just drive to the different lighthouses to check them out (the ones accessibly by car anyway).

I like the brewery tour suggestion. Maybe you could do a beer day. Hit Sam Adams first, then Merrimack Budweiser, then Red Hook, then Shipyard.
:idea: damn that has me salivating. I'm gonna go research tour times to see if something like this is actually doable in a day. lol

I like that idea ... actually alot of them sound good. to bad I am saving my vacation to carry over to next year.

I know there was just a meet recently, but why not do a brewery tour? We don't have to do them all in one day, but we could try, I suppose, as long as no one is getting pie-eyed.

I'd be interested in doing the Budweiser tour, then oysters and steaks at the Silo.

What do y'all say? :cool:

I'm down for that. I haven't been to Silos in a while.

btw, I tried mapping it out, and it'd be tough to do all 4 breweries, but it looks like it's possible on either a Friday or Saturday (as a Manchester resident anyway).
Merrimack first at 9:30.
Sam Adams second, most likely for the 12:00 tour
Red Hook 3rd, most likely the 3:00 tour
Then just barely make it to Shipyard in time for the last tour of the day.

Or you could cut out Merrimack altogether and do the 3 along the coast with more time to spare.

lol Mike and I both have Friday off. This is so damn tempting.
