Hey guys, I am looking for more junkyards in the San Fernando Valley. I am aware of (and frequent) the U Pick Parts and Pick Your Part both in Sunland, but I am curious if there are any others.

I am looking for 4.6L V8's for a new project.

Thanks!

Someone local is probably best to answer, but there used to be junkyards all over the valley. I think there are still at least 3 or 4 in Canoga Park on Deering. There also used to be one or 2 on Nordhoff but I think those are long gone. Anyway, that's just Canoga Park. Look in the yelow pages and I'll bet you find at lest 20 or 30 (actually I just looked ion yellow book and there may be close to a hundred just in Sun Valley!).

Oh those are my two favs (the u-pick and pick your part). Prices are better at the u-pick but they dont put out fresh stuff as often.

I was going to try some of the yards in San Pedro and Stanton. My co-worker and mechanic have both told me about them but I haven't visited yet. I heard there's less "vultures" than sun valley. Will post up when I go...

Please do. I love that Pick Your Part, but stuff is usually pretty well worked over.

Those of you who have met me know I have a lot of wrench time in my car and I spend a fair amount of time in junkyards.

There are two Pick-A-Parts in Wilmington (near San Pedro) and they are both big paved lots with tons of Fords. The Ecology lot in Wilmington seems to get a lot of movie stunt cars so if you need to build a roll cage on the cheap buy a cordless sawzall and go have some fun.

There are two Pick-A-Parts in/near Stanton that are decent. The paved lot seems to have a better selection than the dirt lot and it is typically easier to work in - something about the mixture of dirt and oil seems to really eat through my clothes. Also the dirt lot doesn't have much parking, which can be a pain.

The big Wilmington lot is the best I have been to so far - it's better than the Sunland lot, but Sunland is a close second.

Recovery - do you have a lot suggestion for us in Fontuky or do we just have to roll the dice and hope we win?

There are so many out there you can drive down a street and and see nothing but junk yards. Arrow Rt off Cherry is a good start (just North of the speedway) then there is Whitram Street (one block north of speedway). from Cherry Ave to citrus you will find nothing but Yards some specializing in foreign part, Off Road, Chevys, Fords,..etc...

I spent my younger days in these yards...I brought my first car out of one for $300 67 Chevy Impala (Lowrider baby, 8 track, Jensen 6X9's in the back, Chrome spokes shoes, Diamond tuck,..... whew those were the days)  .

Saw a 65 the other day looking sweet, laid in the Ass with Dayton wires, which I had my camera out when it went by.

There was a black one in the Pick-Your-Part a few weeks back, not even in the "primo" lot. The front was pretty smashed up, though.

I heard about that car and I went looking for it this past week, but no luck. I heard the engine wasn't touched.

If anyone sees an SVT in a yard and you can't buy everything off of it, please post it here so we can go and get the parts we need off of it.

It is hard to find parts for our cars, so we can't let what is good go through a crusher!

Some yards in Jersey/PA would do that, dunno about here. But really, if the cars gotten to that point, its not worth trying to replace everything that needs replacing. You're better off at an insurance auto auction; those cars usually aren't nearly as bad.

I am a big junkyard hound and have been since I was 16. There are a bunch of good yards down in the Chula Vista (south San Diego) including two Ecologies and a P-Y-P. I've seen plenty of SE's & sport Contours but never an SVT.

I do know for a fact that you can buy a whole car from the yards. I bought my 1983 Mustang GT-Turbo (2.3 EFI Turbo, like the SVO) from Ecology. It took a while for all the DMV paperwork to clear and it will have a salvage title but it now sits in my driveway, safe & sound from the crusher.

meh, i'd rather run through Azusa (much closer) and save the Chula vista trip for the junkyard only...besides I would use my toyota pickup to go there and fill it up with parts. :D
