how-to adjust Koni's

Koni's just came in and I want to make sure they are set on full soft when installed. For whatever reason they did not come w/ any instructions. Does the black tip on the struts screw off so that you can use the adjustment nob? Some of the black pieces are screwed on more than others so it looks to me like that are all set on different stiffness. With the black pieces on there, the adjustment wheel appears to have no way of attaching to the strut.

Also if you look at the 1st pic, the left 2 struts have 2 plastic donuts where as the others do not. Is this normal or am I missing pieces?

Thanks

The black caps are just there for shipping purposes to prevent damage to the top. The white knobs just pop on the top for easy adjustment. I can't remember which way softens, and which way stiffens. Not a big deal though, you can adjust after you install.

Thanks for the quick reply .

I wasn't sure what the deal w/ the black tips were. The fronts seem very easy to adjust when they are on the car b/c of access to the strut towers. How about the rears? I'm guessing maybe just have to take the wheels off to adjust those?

So just unscrew the black pieces and then use the nob correct..no need to use a vise or anything?

I'll take a look at the nob to see which way to turn to soften. Should I turn the nob all the way until the nob stops turning or is it recommended to leave a little bit or room i.e. just a little bit from complete soft?

P.S. what about those plastic donut pieces...are there only supposed to be 2 or should there be 4?

the black pieces should just pull off. they are not screwed on. as for the little plastic donut pieces IIRC mine only came with two also so i think thats correct. there should be no problems with turning it till it stops. the plastic on the knob will strip before you do any damage.

Ok good. I just wanted to make sure that there is only supposed to be to plastic donut shaped rings. Whats the purpose of these anyway? They look like bump stops from what I can see. Why only the one pair of struts have them and not the other pair?

Ok so...I pulled the black pieces off and attached the white nob to adjust the firmness. I was turning the nob and there is no stop point for full firm or full soft:confused:. I could just keep twisting and twisting the white nob in both directions. How do you know where you have it set at?

It should stop at full soft. Then you turn it the other way and it doesn't take much for it to go full hard. Check on konis website.... I think that about 2 360 degree turns puts it to full hard. Don't quote me on that though. I believe it turns forever on full hard, but you don't want to leave it that way with it turned 70 times to the full hard side.

It has been awhile since I have messed with mine, but that is what I remember.

And paint those suckers before you install them! Konis paint sucks big time! Or get them powder coated!!! :)

lol huh??

It doesn't seem to stop turning in either direction. I can twist the nob several revolutions and it just keeps going. So this means its on full stiff? I don't want to keep turning the nob and mess something up. I thought these things were only supposed to turn like half a revolution to a full revolution to switch it from full soft to full stiff.

Your correct. It is only supposed to be 1 or 2 full revolutions to go from full soft to full stiff. Keep turning it all the way soft. It should stop once it hits soft! You won't hurt it turning it around and around until it stops at soft. Just make sure you are turning it in the soft direction! It should say on your knob which way to turn it. I have a group buy aluminum knob , so I don't have the directions on my knob. Anyways, turn it soft until it stops.

Did you paint yours? I don't know if I want to powder coat b/c wouldn't it require sandblasting. I don't know how good that is for sand potentially getting down inside the cylinder.

Depending on personal preference the yellow might get kind of old if you can see them through the wheel well gap while installed. Any ideas on what kind of paint to use.

No, I didn't paint them, but I reallllly need to. The Koni paint sucks big time. I know there have been a number of threads about this, but I haven't done much research at all on the subject of painting struts. I just thought I should warn you that the paint is terrible.

I didn't put them in yet. I'm waiting till a warm day so I can put a layer of clear on the Koni's to protect them from rusting.

I was going to just use the Eibach's that are on the car now. But if I can find a new set of B&G Sports for cheap I will pick them up and use them.

Yea see that looks amazing! Is that the B&G sports? It looks like it. The autobahns are a serious drop...way to low for DD.

Also does he have the koni's cranked up to full stiff that made the ride that stiff?

I will be leaving mine on full soft.

I need to find a cheap pair of new B&G's !!!

That's what the PRT Mirko skid plate is for

We shall see...I just ordered B&G's last night. Koni's and B&G's will hopefully go on in a few weeks and the Mirko this spring.
