I just picked up a 98 Contour from a family member. She did not keep up with much of the maintenance on the car. I know for sure that she never replaced the MTX tranny fluid.

So I am planning on doing that one very soon using the Royal Purple Synchromax and the how-to I found here.

So here's the question: I've read about using a "flush kit" for getting the old Mercon out. I've also read here that you can use ATF+3 or ATF+4 for the same purpose. You drive around for a few miles with it and then drain it again. Is any of this worth it or should I just drain the Mercon as best as possible and put in the RP?

Oh yeah, do I need that friction modifier from Ford if I am going to use the RP? I don't think so, but I need to know for sure. Thanks!

its up to you. I have never used anything to "clean out" the original fluid. Just change it say every 30k or something and it should be fine.

if you are using the RP do not use the friction modifier.

time out first you said MTX (manual trans ) then you said mercon as in automatic (ATX)

yeah the original fill was dextron III/mercon in the mtx. you now want to use the ford "honey" or syncromax.

the friction modifier was only to be used with the atx fluid.

and you do know that the power steering is filled with atx fluid also? 95s use the type F fluid as I cross referenced it before and the rest are the normal dextron/mercon spec'd for the cars atx.

I've wondered about that for a long time why did they change it  did they do something internal to the power steering system on later models:shrug:

I think it's about getting rid of obsolete type F, no trans using it by then, no need to stock it in dealership and extra costing. I have interchanged ANY type of ATX fluid in any brand power steering and never had any trouble at all. No need to buy specific power steering fluid, at least not yet. Having said that, there's probably a unit out there now that if wrong stuff put in it will burn up. In the old metal pump/w metal vanes type though, doesn't matter as long as it's trans fluid of some type. DON'T use motor oil, need something specific for hydraulics.
