F the police

So you WERE speeding... and their the pricks...

They're = they are
Their = suggests ownership
There = place

in NY, any aftermarket exhaust is illegal. must be a stock replacement. i've been nailed countless times for my magnaflows. they're real anal about that here. im pretty sure its like that in most states

Nope, NY is more like an exception rather than the rule. Come out to the upper midwest and you could drive down the street with zoomies and maybe the worst you will get it a noise pollution ticket.

Most aftermarket exhausts in jersey are Illegal. You can get away with it but if the police want to they can give you a ticket!

Did you have your silencers on?

Did the cop take a decibel test on your exhaust? If not he cannot prove it in court and you can go to court and just say you had a hole in your exhaust that just sprung!

Otherwise, you would lose? G Luck and get a life, talking crap about the police will not get you anywhere. They are doing their job!

I can understand the op's frustration. I got the same ticket a few months ago for a loud modified exhaust. Thing is, the cop had been tailing me for a while. Apparently, he had nuthn on me. And so he had to reward himself with issuing a ticket after all that tailgating he had done. He asked if i had modified my exhaust. I said yes. He said in the state of nevada, it's illegal to modify an exhaust. If anyone has been to vegas, u'd know that this city is crawling with every other honda accord or civic that has an obnoxious fart can as a tailpipe. Weird thing is the ticket didnt have an amount. But the officer said if i wanted to dismiss it, i must 1-return it to stock, & 2-get another officer to sign off on it. Of course, i had ABSOLUTELY ZERO plans to do that! That was not gonna happen, as i'd just installed my 3" SS trubendz at the time:cool:. I also had no doubt in my mind that my exhaust wasnt that loud. And so here's what i did; I found and stopped an officer in a parking lot a couple of weeks later with the same unchanged exhaust to sign off on it. The officer said, and i quote, "Did an officer actually write u this ticket? I cant believe it. Thats just stupid"(while shaking his head & signing off)... end of story:)

Changes in attitudes

Changes in attitudes

It could simply be a change in attitudes. People are getting sick and tired of fart cans on cars and straight pipes on motorcycles and the police are now enforcing laws that have been on the books for many years. And who is to blame??? Yup that's right the same people who put fart cans on their cars and straight pipes on their motorcycles. Even though you think it sounds great, it merely pisses most people off. And when enough of them get pissed off, they talk to their elected officials who then either provide direction to the police to enforce the laws, or if no laws are in effect, pass restrictive new laws.

I live above the city and those idiots with straight pipes can be heard for over a mile when they dip into the throttle.

Don't blame the police, blame yourself.

I can see both sides of the argument but as far as im concerned all we are looking for is some consistancy. some cops are real pricks, and some are real car guys. so getting pulled over by a prick cop and getting ticketed, when the cop that likes cars says he likes the exhaust you got on it is just plain frustrating. just sounds to me like a case of bored copper. my 2 cents

I fully agree, looks to me like the Old Bill are the same in the US as they are here in the UK, I must say you would think they would have better things to do than pull over motorists, I suppose its an easy target and keeps the "crimes solved" figures up.

Might be a little late, but do you have any sort of receipt or anything that states your exhaust is 50-state legal? If not, you're pretty much screwed since most exhausts are 'for off-road use only'. You can't knock law enforcement if they know something like that, particularly if people who call themselves 'enthusiasts' don't. I could bet you an arm and a leg that the officer, at one point, was an enthusiast like the rest of us, which makes him a dangerous addiction to the force.

At anyrate, hope all goes well. Like someone said, 'you hafta pay to play'.

1.3 million people venture out to Woodward road here in michigan each year for a 3 day event....and about 100K plus motorists hit the street and since 80% of them have aftermarket exhaust...shouldn't they get ticketed also.....but no ticket for noise pollution has been given. If they did almost every car would be pulled over :laugh: What makes this case any different? We have 29 cruises we here in Michigan that i know of and 70%+ of the cars that cruise in these public free events have after market exhaust.

The cop was just being a prick.

amen...

The point is Cops have enough say in how they enforce laws that if they so choose they can throw the book at you.

Also some areas are just pickier than others... usually you just get a fix it ticket that any police Department can sign off on.

my wife got a ticket for exhaust once I was only running 1 muffler on duals (did it for over a year there was a fuel pump where the other muffler was suppose to go) so I relocated the fuel pump stuff and bolted the muffler up and sent my wife to our police station to get them to sign off on it. They asked what was done to fix it and I quote Wife"My husband pulled the car in the garage and fixed it" they said okay and didn't even look at the car or check it I didn't have any receipts because I didn't have to buy any parts for the exhaust.

Police are crazy they can pull you over for a lot of stuff if they want to.

so if you go through Brighton put a resonator or something on it or avoid the place. aftermarklet lights are illegal in Michigan but you see a-lot of them on cars too. or get some SVT badges and say it is a SVT. but really how many Cops know what a SVT contour is?

I know of 3 cops around here that drive SVT's. I'm a cop , and I drove a turbo charged SVT until a week ago. Remember, we have bosses too. If your supervisor says "We are getting a ton of loud exhaust complaints..take care of it". Then as the "messengers" we enforce the rules where the complaints are. My SVT had Bassani cat-back on it. I kept the inserts in it, because it is obnoxiously loud w/o them. In a zero tolerance area, a Bassaani w/o inserts is excessive exhaust noise. Just another shining example of just how thankless a job I have...Your welcome!

damn cops... :laugh:

Thats the damn truth. On of my mazdas didnt have a license plate light or even have the wiring for it like the other one did so I never thought about it. Until I started visiting my girlfriend and got pulled over on the way up and way back every single time usually by the same cop both times each weekend. Sure not having the light is probably a bigger deal than loud exhaust to some people but it took years for a cop to finally pull me over for something that techincally should have failed my yearly inspection.

I dunno how anyone can say cops are crazy? Everytime I've gotten pulled over I was breaking the law, be it speeding,loud exhaust ,driving like an idiot etc. never once have I got pulled over just to check me out. Over half the time i was polite and admitted what I did I was let off with a warning and no ticket. if it was your job would you just drive around and ignore law breakers or bust them?

hey. its a car website. what do u expect? here's where we vent. besides no one is saying cops are wrong for doing their job. we'd just like them to be more consistent thats all. if u read my first post, u'd see how coniving the cop that stopped me was. trailed me for so long, and told me my exhausts were modified and had to go back to stock. c'mon seriously... how long does it take to realize that the two massive mufflers & 4" tips behind my car aren't stock?:rolleyes:

I appreciate what the cops do a lot, but every place has the ones that are trying to prove something to someone. Probably got bullied or had it bad as a kid, and now abuse what power they have. Not all of them, but it only takes a few to give cops a bad reputation. I had a state trooper pull me over and harrass me over a dirty liscence plate. My car was a turbo diesle and he said "I couldn't read your plate when i passed by". Then gave a written warning. Waist of half an hour going to work.

coulda been worse, he could have ticketed you for it.

I have gotten pulled over before and detained by a cop for half an hour because he was trying to get me to admit that I had been smoking pot, this was less than 2 years ago, and I havent smoked pot in 10 years. His excuse for pulling me over was that the child in my back seat wasnt buckled in. Although the "child" in my back seat was a 21 year old girl. The cop just thought I was suspicious and wanted to check me out cause I drive modified cars in small towns. I got pulled over once leaving the town I lived in by a highway patrol officer that didnt know me. He said I didnt stop at a stop sign and gave me a warning, what he really wanted to do is ask me if I had been drinking, since it was a saturday, and the town I was living in was about 60 people and was well known for the fact that most of the inhabitants or visitors were intoxicated all the time. (pretty sad that the sheriff for the county came to the bar there all the time and would get smashed with me)

some cops are dicks. MOST cops though are just doing their job. Other than the two examples I have given, any cop that has ever pulled me over had a good reason to do so. Aside from that the worst I have ever seen a cop do is follow me for almost a mile in Omaha before he found a reason to pull me over. It was just a cop who saw a crappy car full of teenagers. I wouldnt say he had a chip on his shoulder, he was just profiling and hoping luck would be on his side and catch a carload of teenagers that was doing something bad. I forgot to use my turn signal for one of my lane changes and he got me on it. He didnt write me a ticket so I was lucky. I thought he was a dick, but he was just trying to do his job. He just happened to be a little misguided.

I've hung out with many cops on several occasions at bars restaurants etc etc. They love to brag to me about, how they punish punk kids all the time. It's sickening how they treat people everywhere we go.:nonono: Drinking beers while driving always speeding everywhere etc etc. In all honesty i know they are human...but you have to be a really well grounded person to have the ability to differentiate right from wrong...when you yield that much power.:blackeye:

My only gripes with the police in my area, State Troopers or Town Cops...they all seem to have no concept of doing the speed limit or using turn signals.
