engine blown

this is the second engine in the car, it has approximately 125k. not sure why the first on was replaced, probably due to lack of knowledge about these engines. the car has a 165k on it. im going to take it to another place to get timed. im not going to tell them that the belt broke just that i was replacing it and couldnt get it in time. that way they are not biased. thanks

So you did replace everything and just didn't time it or.....you want them to replace it? Cause if they are replacing the belt but don't replace the pullies and tensioner, etc. Your just short changing yourself.

they just replace the belt and said he said he timed it. then he said it wouldnt start and said that some of the cyclinders had no compression. im going to have him take the head off just to prove that he didnt have it in time. i hate to take it somewhere else because i will have about $120 in a tow bill to get it to a new shop.

I hope they changed the pulleys and tensioner too. Sounds like the timing is still off.

rather than have him take the head off and risk more labor and possible damage why don't you point him to this site for info. No way it damaged all the valves, it's not timed right.

seems unusual that you would have "no" compression (obviously, 0 compression is impossible with atmospheric pressure contributing), on any of the cylinders. but, since it's happening on more than one cylinder, i'm not sure it's a timing issue, since you should still get some compression if it was timed by a mechanic. maybe a broken camshaft.

If that mechanic can't handle it, take it someplace else. Your valves are fine, I promise! Don't waste any more time on this guy, and don't go pulling the head for no reason. If you're not comfortable messing with it yourself, take it to another shop and have them set the timing.

just a quick update. the car is finally at another shop. hope to here from them today. i will let you all know the verdict

ok, the car has been at the second mechanic who had it retimmed, he said that the timming was off so he put it in time, and still know luck. he has 50psi on the cyclinders this time. he thinks just changing the head isnt a good idea, so he is looking for a another engine. looks like i fall in the 10% of the people that have engines messed up by the timing. if you guys have any other ideas please let me know. thanks

have him do a cylinder leakdown test. it will tell him where it is leaking from the cylinders. also there is nothing wrong with just replacing the head if thats the problem.

they wanted $1890 to replace the engine. he verified the timming again and its is good. im just having the car towed to the house and i will pull the head and replace it myself. he said i would have about 800 for the head replacement and that might not even fix it.thanks for all the help

here's an option. 1 year warranty, too. i've replaced several heads on cars, and buying refurbished from ebay has done pretty well for me. make sure if you do, though, use paypal.

I'm telling you, they're feeding you a load of BS! Unless you have a snapped cam or something like that, that wouldn't happen if it were timed right. Find a mechanic who can handle it, and who will use the proper cam alignment tool.

If you're really convinced there's something wrong with the head, take it off and look. I think you'll find that it's all fine. But don't go buying a new one if you don't even know what's wrong.

there's been so much going on with this thread, i think we need him to give us everything that's going on in one post. all these "oh it's probably this" posts from both ends are confusing the story.
