Cheap Gas

The 76 station on SW Walker close to Knoll, almost directly across from the Nike campus, was down to $2.99 for regular about a week ago. I've not been past it since to see what it's down to now.

Meanwhile, my gauge is running low, a drive down SE 52nd sounds like a good idea.

Thank you for the tip, AF.

Be careful where you shop for "cheap" gas. Most of the time it is just that, cheap gas. Call me crazy but I can tell a difference in Shell/Chevron vs. cheaper brands. And what does it come out to maybe $5-$8 more per fill-up. Just not worth it IMO.

The Shell station less than a mile east of I-205 on Hwy 212 had regular for $2.999 a couple of days ago, and the Chevron and Shell stations just off I-205 and Hwy 212 had it for $3.099. It's amazing the price difference by just going a few blocks away from major highways.

Today the premium was $3.059, and the regular was $2.939 on 52 & Duke.

Out in Dundee the Arco was $3.059 premium, and regular was $2.979 on tuesday.

I have run everything expensive and cheap in my SE and it doesn't seem to care a bit.

most likely to be short lived here in the Peoples Republik of Potterstan on the Willamette, they are pushing for a big raise in the gas taxes to fix streets because they spent the tax $$$'s they had for that on this stupid tram that is $60,000,000 over budget and only benefits about 800 people. What a bunch of jackasses....... together the city council could scrape up an IQ of 20.

All these gas prices are ridiculously low.
I put in gas last week at 1.29 a liter. And that's the 87 Octane.

Converted, there are 3.78 liters in a gallon...so...
that's $4.78/gallon.

And to think, I'm from the place that produces all the petroleum....

At least it is nice to know you are not alone when being ripped off......

Hey let's all get CNG Tours and screw the gas companies back. You can install a fuel maker at home and not pay the road taxes

*laughs* clever idea.
It doesn't bother me though, I know how much work it takes to get that stuff from the ground to the gas tank. I think it's relatively cheap, given all that has to be done to it in order to become useable.
I suppose that I'm a bit biased though...geologist and all.
Though I will admit, going from my contour which took 40 bucks max to a chev S.U.V. which takes 70 bucks was kind of painful. Can't wait to get back into something with a smaller tank :)

Well down here in the states over the past two years gas went from $1.50/gal US to $.350/gal US. That just isn't right and there is no reasonable reason for it. I believe they are just trying to see how far it can be pushed befor there is an out cry about it. I don't know if you have seen the news interviews, but it is never me on there! it is always someone that says something stupid like "Well I really don't care how much it is" or "There is nothing that can be done so I'll just have to pay what they ask" Never a statement about how we are getting taken for a ride on this, and how upset people are about it. I hear it all the time and even the gas station guy doesn't look you in the eye anymore. I am not implying that fellow is getting anything more than a hard time about it, but with record profits and lower refining production someone is laughing all the way to the bank while others are trying to figure out, do I buy gas to go to work or pay the rent. I am just ranting on their behalf.... most of my gas is paid for.

I disagree with you. I have talked about this topic so much it hurts. This is my take on it... My own rant, not attacking you or anyone, but this is how I see it:

Name one thing you have bought your entire life that hasn't increased in price. Milk, water, groceries, produce. Inflation boosts the costs of everyday products up more and more as the years go by.

Labor costs change. People get raises.

People think that oil/gas just comes out of the ground and BOOM, it's ready to go into a car.

For one minute, think about this with me.Just hear me out.

Oil/gas found in the middle of nowhere. How are you going to pump it? How are you going to transport it? Surely you'll need fuel haulers or a pipeline. Once you pump it, where are you going to send it to get refined for use? How are you going to pay for all this transport and refining? How are you going to pay for your geologists/geophysicists fee, your drillers/helpers/cooks/camp managers/line-cutters etc? What about supplies to the camps for those people who stay out in camps for weeks/months on end during exploration programs?

People hardly ever think about this stuff. But THAT is what you see in the price. Everyone wants gas, everyone needs it, but we neeeeeeeeeeever ***** that tomatoes are 60 dollars a case in the winter. We neeeeeeeeeeever complain that even MILK WAS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN GAS FOR YEARS! Now we've got our panties in a knot, trying to "damn the man" with all these price increases.

The demand for oil and gas has gotten so high that companies are scrambling to find new prospects. Pipelines to carry fuel take years to make- refineries currently in production are over-capacity. It's not that there isn't enough fuel to go around- but companies have to beg to get their stuff refined through other companies to get it out on the market. Refineries and pipelines are *extremely* expensive. Taxes that companies pay on their oil and gas are sometimes half the cost of the barrel.

I think that if more people considered what went into the oil and gas industry, they would be more lenient about the price. But I can't expect that everyone will see my perspective, or agree with it. It is what it is, and to each their own. This is just my two cents :)

There is truth in what you say my friend, but those items have been in the price at $0.75 /gal and they were not loosing money then. Nothing has changed they are not building new refineries or adding infrastructure. They are just taking record profits. They ARE still looking / finding / cataloging oil deposits for future use. I hear there is more oil in the shale up North than in Saudi Arabia. I would not be so opposed to the cost IF it were in line with the cost of living adjustments that normally occure. HOWEVER they are just jacking prices because they can, and like I said taking the largest profits in history. John D Rockafeller (sp) became the first BILLIONAIR when gas was $0.03/ gal so IMHO, that presentation you gave on the cost while true in nature is not the reason that the price is way up today. There is more oil and gas avaliable today than there was even a decade ago. Diesel and propane both byproducts of making gasoline are way up too.

You are not alone in your work in the petroleum field, I too have been involved in the industry around the edges. I worked on the new construction of 5 Chrvron tankers, some crude, some refined goods, and 1 Texaco. In addition I worked on the Manhattan when it was the largest tanker in the world, and many smaller ones. There have always been costs, but now the takings on their part are WAY out of line. Even to the extent that they have caused the cost of the services you mentioned to increase just due to the excessive fuel prices. Try shipping something anyplace and see if there isn't a fuel surcharge. We get that even from the garbage hauler these days. It is just WRONG!

I am not even going into how we ought to be getting oil from Iraq right now either...

my 2 cents :)
