anyone seen this yet?

Ford-Ranger-Max-Concept-01.jpg

I wish there was something to compare it to in size. if that is on the same platform as the current ranger then I'm all for it, but if it's a midsize like all the mini trucks have turned into I'll be pissed... ranger is the last true mini truck....

The US will not see a new Ranger after this model year. It's pretty much official that Ford is shutting down the Ranger plant in St. Paul, MN (I know because my dad has been working there for the past 47 years). The plant is in dire need of building maintenance, which would cost Ford way to much (they threw in the towel on this plant long ago). Not only that but no other plant is picking up the US Ranger truck's production. The truck will continue to be built in Mexico and a few other Asian countries, which will support the Ranger sales in the markets where it is still sold. That global Ranger, if you will, is a little larger then the US spec Ranger. There was talk of that larger Ranger hitting stateside using the new 4cyl ecoboost engine, but that is not very likely. The killing of the Ranger is also bringing the killing of the Explorer Sport-Trac as well.

uh, because the new explorer is a for taurus with a lift kit??? the explorer died too as far as I'm concerned. SUV's dont have transverse haldex set ups. and they certainly arent available in FWD.... sorry ford, you've screwed the pooch in your truck/suv division. the explorer is now just a big edge (read stationwagon)

I absolutely LOVE the new Explorers. I'm probably with 95% of the other previous gen Explorer owners too in that mine has only been "off road" at the pumpkin patch or finding a place to park to watch 4th of July fireworks... :) I fully agree, it's exactly as you state, but it will sell the same and deliver 100% better for 95% of previous buyers!
I too wish the Ranger would stay small and get redesigned, but it seems way too long in the tooth for Ford to do anything with it now. I don't think it's had any serious overhaul since the early 90's. With "mini" trucks (Colorado/Tacoma) costing almost as much as full size, I certainly respect their decision.
Kinda sad to hear the Sport Trac is leaving. I hadn't heard that. Although, it seems there are very few late models on the roads anymore.

so I guess 100% of true SUV sales will go to chrysler now...

I guess ford wasnt paying any attention when tekademiks put the third gen exploder up against the FX45 (a wagon like the new exploder) and the FX was completely unroad worthy after the beating but the exploder was unscathed mechanically? nore where they watching when they took a totally stock exploder up against an h1 humvee on an "expert only" off road trail and the exploder made it through without any damage? try that in the new ford taurus 4X4.....

So Ford will lose 5% of the market that really gives a flying fart about whether the car is a "real SUV" or not while gaining 50% more market because it still does what any soccer mom needs it to and more, looks better doing it, doesn't have the ever-growing stigma of driving an "SUV", and yielding 20% better gas mileage than the outgoing model.

Yeah, what a stupid idea.

It sounds like the truck guys that were lamenting Ford putting a V6 into the F-150 and how it wasn't going to be a 'real truck' without the V8 and real men wouldn't buy it that way and it was a waste of time and other stupid BS. In a span of just 5 months Ford went from not selling a V6 F-150 at all to V6s making up the MAJORITY of what was being purchased. Most people don't need to tow 10,000lbs with their F-150 just like most people don't need their Explorer to ford a 6ft ditch. So big whoopty-doo if some "true SUV" whoops its ass offroad. If you're one of the 6 people in the country for whom that really matters, go ahead and buy the "true SUV".

Fact of the matter is that the new Explorer is selling better than the old one had in a half-decade and almost as well as it ever had, and is outselling those "true SUVs" from Chrysler by 50% (Cherokee) and 300% (Durango). And it's doing so at a lower production cost per unit and a higher average sales price, so while the other manufacturers are busy demonstrating their "true SUV"s offroad prowess, Ford's busy using the Explorer to haul all its extra cash to the bank.

Sounds to me like they really were paying attention after all -- to what the market said it really wanted rather than the handful of braindead rednecks making "Muddin'" YouTube videos that was apparently the entirety of the focus group that Ford used for its entire lineup the past 10 years.

well •••• the explorer now is my point, I'll just not be a poser and buy an audi a4 all road or a subaru outback. both far more competent "off road" station wagons, sans the drama of working on a sideways engine.....

if your not listening, my primary complaint is with the sideways engine and the 2wd model being FWD.... not the uni-body.....

I have to agree 100% with this. My X3 is a much much much better daily driver vs my old Navigator. 10 more miles/gallon on the highway, better handling, full time AWD vs automatic 4WD. Granted, there are times I would like to have the Navigator back to go down some old logging trails we have but that would be done around 3 times a year. Does it makes sense to have a vehicle like that for every other day of the year?

Also whoever thinks an X3 or a FX35/45 are even supposed to go offroad are the dumbest people on the planet. I know mine doesn't even have low range setting, and I seriously doubt the FX's do either. Both also have a RWD bias until the wheels start to slip, then it will transfer power. But those two features together and you will soon realize that off roading them is not a smart idea. Put them on the pavement though and they are worlds ahead of those 4x4's.

again, my complaint with the new explorer is the transverse engine and the front wheel bias.... is anyone listening????

the FX and the BMW have longitudinal engines and what would otherwise be a RWD drivetrain....

also, previous gen explorer/aviator/mountaineer where all available with full time AWD in one form or another....

Oh Lord no. It still has an AWD and a 3.5L v6 that has almost 300 hp while getting almost 25 mpg. I know on my moms old 2010 Escape with the AWD and v6, I was getting north of 30 mpg out of it as well...but I suppose it was junk as well since its engine wasn't facing the "right" way.

it's engine was facing the right way for it's class, which is the same as the rav4, kia sportage etc...

the explorer was supposed to be a full size SUV and now it's a crossover.... deciding not to call it a cross over doesnt make it not a cross over....

they could have easily put the 3.7l out of the mustang in it facing longitudinally and built on what they learned while making the Rangerover.....

1st gen explorer, 184 inches long, 2nd gen escape, 174 inches long, 4th and 5th gen explorer 194 inches long.

The escape replaced what the explorer was supposed to be a long time ago, a mid-sized SUV. Ford still makes an Expedition that is 10 inches longer than the explorer if you are looking for a full size SUV with an engine facing the "right" direction putting power to the "right" wheels in a traditional chassis on frame truck style setup.

The explorer was only a really good vehicle offroad in the first gen, the second gen was passable, after that, they were just bloated station wagons on truck frames. I hate the styling of the new explorer, but it was definitely the right way for ford to go with it. I'm actually told the 5th gen explorer is as good offroad as the 4th gen, which..... wasn't really worth writing home about either. A new escape is just as roomy as a first gen explorer, if not more so, and the new explorer is TONS more roomy than the 4th gen even. Also, having the non-awd explorers available in FWD configuration opens up a HUGE market. There are tons of potential SUV buyers who don't want a 4wd but are scared of RWD vehicles in bad weather or winter driving, and a lot of them want or need something bigger than an escape.
