My SVT has been pinging for as long as I've owned it, about 2 years. In that time I've had to replace parts. I've found many broken parts, hoses, sensors on this car and I found the DPFE sensor was physically broken and one of the hoses was split. I replaced the hose and saw that the sensor case was in 2 pieces, exposing the circuit board. I figured the sensor still worked, since it didn't throw a check engine light and the car passed emissions and the EGR monitor was ready. The previous owner said the clutch was new, so I think it was damaged during that event. There must have been some serious force to break the case in half and split a hose.

This is the only thing that is an issue that I can think of relating my pinging issue. It only pings when the engine is at full operating temperature only under a load with anything more than 50% throttle. It is a very nasty noise that sounds like the engine is going to blow. It will not do it when the engine is cold or warming up. I've always put 93 octane in since 2010.

Could this sensor be the reason why it's pinging?

sounds like maybe a rod bearing... pull the oill man or drain some oil and see if you have any metal.

I kinda had the feeling its the rod bearings.

Think I can get away with throwing a set of autozone bearings in there?

If you're going to do the work of taking the engine apart and replacing the bearing just use clevites. they aren't much more expensive. Also depending on the severity of the bearing wear make sure the crank is good and if there is alot of metal the oil galleries need to be cleaned

lets not jump to conclusions here.
pinging and knocking are two VERY different and distinctive sounds. if it was the rod bearings it would do it at idle too, and would like like a handfull of marbles in a tin coffee can.
pinging while its warm is very likely a timing or heat issue. try a step colder plug. what kind of plugs are you running? how old? how's your coil pack and plugs?

Definitely doesn't do it at idle or while driving calmly. Engine runs smooth.

The noise is very irradic and random. Definitely a pinging noise.

Coil pack is 3 months old, plugs are 1 year old. Plugs are NGK iridium.

My DPFE sensor is physically damaged so I think it is not responding.

It says this

"Too much EGR flow tends to weaken combustion, causing the engine to run rough or stop. When the EGR flow is excessive, the engine can stop after a cold start or at idle after deceleration, the vehicle can surge at cruising speeds or the idle may be rough. If the EGR valve remains constantly open, the engine may not idle at all.

Too little or no EGR flow allows combustion temperatures to get too high during acceleration and load conditions. This can cause spark knock ( detonation ), engine overheating or emission test failure.

It may be contributing to your problem but I dont think it's your main issue. start with new plugs, autolite platinum, if possible take it down a heat range and see what happens. any chance you can get ahold of a good 0bd2 scanner that can tell you real time data, esp your timing.

The EGR system is designed to help stop detonation as part of its affect of lowering peak combustion chamber temperatures and NOx formation for emissions. A broken or plugged EGR system will be a likely cause of pinging. I would replace the dpfe (can you use the metal housing one?) check the passages under the throttle body that routinely plug and make sure the egr valve works also.

Pull plugs and see if you have electrodes left on those plugs. My bosch plats burned away after 10k miles. Put autolites back in and it runs great! If you have never pulled the throttle body off, I suggest doing that and cleaning all the passages underneath like someone mentioned up there. After 100k miles, mine were more than clogged..

+1 to that, and the plugs for that matter

The car I picked up from blu_fuz pinged when I first got it. I took off the upper intake and throttle body and cleaned them up, cleared the EGR and IAC passages, and also hooked up the linkage for the IMRC which was off of one bank. After that it doesn't ping and runs like a top.

Wow, thanks for all the input guys!

Just as a FYI the engine runs as smooth as brand new when it is cold and warming up. I can hold it to WOT and listen to it sing its SVT song beautifully. As soon as it hits full operating temp you can't even stab the gas pedal without hearing CLACK CLACK, RATTLE CLACK, RAP RAP RAP. IT WILL NOT DO IT WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD.

As far as new parts I've thrown at this car to try and fix it every part is less than 1 year old

NGK iridium plugs
Bosch plug wires
Autozone fuel filter
Purolator air filter
Autozone coilpack
Autozone ECT sensor
Autozone Cam sensor
Autozone IAT sensor
Autozone DPFE sensor
Bosch Bank 1 sensor 1 O2 sensor
Bosch Bank 1 sensor 2 O2 sensor
Bosch Bank 2 sensor 1 O2 sensor
Bosch Bank 2 sensor 2 O2 sensor
Redline 5w30 engine oil
K&N Oil filter

I'm going to take the throttle body off and the EGR valve off and see if there are restrictions. Car has 140K on it now.

Carbon buildup in the combustion chamber and on the piston heads will cause pinging when hot. It starts to low red under the high heat of combustion, and pre-detonates the fuel mix.

I would suggest a really harsh chemical treatment in the fuel system; one of those 3M jobs that ports directly into the fuel rail. At the very least, get a can of BG 44K for it.

So I tried to find a throttle body gasket for an SVT duratec V6 and nobody knows what I'm talking about.

I did get a non svt throttle body gasket and an egr gasket.

I took the throttle body and EGR valve off.

This is what I found

I cleaned all the carbon away from the EGR passages at the throttle body. The EGR passage at the egr valve was clear.

I have to go drive it to see if its fixed.

thats not too bad, i've seen much worse. grab a video, it makes it much easier for us keyboard mechanics to diagnose..

I would also clean the MAF. If you have an oiled filter it can contaminate the MAf and cause pinging.

Still pinging after I cleaned everything.

I bought motorcraft platinum plugs and installed them.

The cylinder closest to the timing chains on the rear cylinder head has something wrong with it, the insulator part in the combustion chamber was black and worn away. The other 5 spark plugs were nice and white.

If you're going to Auto Zone or somewhere like that just tell them it's the 2.5L H.O. engine after you tell them the year, make and model, then get a TB gasket for that.

It should also be mentioned that you can't use any old cleaner to clean the MAF. There may be some insider scoop on how to do it, but if you buy MAF cleaner made by CRC or another specialized cleaner you'll be fine if you follow the directions.
