Bad pinging under load

Preignition?

Had a pro listen to it and we've determined its timing chain noise. Funny how it only makes noise when at 200 degrees F.

Looks like its time to tear it apart and rebuild it.

Thanks for all the help guys!!

As far as the TB gasket, Yep I made sure they hit VIN G when the 4 engine choices come up, the picture they show is correct, but they come from out back with a non SVT TB gasket and tell me thats all they have and all they could ever get.

I replaced my fuel filter with a luber finer autozone brand back in Jan 2011. The one I took off was the factory unit and when I poured it out brown gas came out.

So I decided to replace the autozone filter with a motorcraft one today. The autozone one is only a year old, and I've only pumped gas from one mobil station in the past 2 years.

When I poured out the 1 year old 10K mile old autozone filter, the gas was a little cloudy and had a brown tint to it. Not as bad as the first time I replaced it but it was still bad enough to say I have bad gas.

I want to make sure the basics are covered before I start a major overhaul.

I think I'll do 1 month fuel filter changes for a while and see what happens.

My SVT had the same symptoms. Only pinged after warm, didnt hear it at idle only under load, etc, etc. Did that for two years. Sounded like it was coming from the area below cylinder 4, near the timing cover or exhaust manifold. Had several mechs look at it and no one could figure it out. I too thought it was coming from the timing chains but could not locate the source with a mech scope. Last year it started getting slowly worse, still didnt hear it when cold though. Eventually, I hit a big raccoon and lost a little bit of oil from the pan and the rod bearings completely went. Noise quadrupled overnight and did it all the time even when cold. Just replaced the engine two months ago. I've read somewhere on the forum that rod knock sometimes sounds like its coming from the top of the engine. If your going to take her out of commission, might want to check the bearings while your at it. It would su&^ to do all that work on the timing chains just to have the noise still there.

Good luck.

The noise is definately coming from under bank 2's valve cover. It's in the valvetrain. I think it's the valve lifters.

Everyone I talk to says its a timing issue at this point.

From what I understand the crankshaft position sensor handles ignition timing and the camshaft position sensor handles injector timing.

I already replaced the cam sensor because it is cheap and very easy.

So today I decided to replace the crank sensor.

It looks like it got bigger, splitting the body of the sensor.

The new sensor has a metal body not a plastic body like the stock sensor.

They kept giving me a NON-SVT throttle body gasket.

I had to bring my old one in and shove it right in the retards face at the parts store.

It's still pinging. There are only 3 sensors I haven't replaced yet. MAF, knock, and TPS. Knock sensor is next on the list. Too bad there are only 2 in the country and they are $200 each.

If there was something wrong with the plug in cyl 5, it might be worth pulling the injector to inspect it. Even throwing a spare from someone here on the forum might be a good idea. If the injector is metering too much fuel, it will cause hell on one cylinder
