another Spec Stage 3+ failure

after further inspection I am going to say it was my fault the tob failed. sucks but what can you do. issue correctly fixed and car is on its way to being back together.

got everything back together last night and took the car for a drive. the vibration/clutch chatter I was mentioning before is gone, or at least I didn't note any. I adjusted the roll restrictors when I put everything back together this time. I'll report back when I get some more miles on the car again.

cool beans brian. so u should be back up n running in no time? i didnt read the whole thread, but what took u so long to get her back on the road?

car has been off the road twice this summer. first time was for the clutch. that happened at SZ this year. It was about 2.5 months later that I got a clutch and got it back on the raod.

just last week the tob failed, just got it back together from that other night.

ok I have some rockwell C hardness test results. I have alot more digging and researching to do on the specific materials before I draw an further conclusions from this data.

Spec - 50
Stock SE - 55

This seems to confirm that the spec clutch spring cage is not strong enough for the application. now I don't know if this means it wasn't properly heat treated or if its just the wrong material. I plan to try to find out the material of the clutches so that I can find out where the hardness test results fall in terms of yeild stress for the particular metals used.

Brapple, Hardness doesn't necessarily indicate that it isn't strong enough.
Rubber is very strong.....
However, you are probably correctly identifying the fact that they are not using a high enough grade of steel for the application based on that design. This could be easily compensated for with a design change or they could use a stronger steel.

It sucks the won't give you any replacement or compensation though.

60-day update? :)

car was put away for winter last week

Didn't drive it much after replacing the TOB but the last few times out the clutch was great. I do get some chatter from time to time still but its livable. I did pick up some pole120 roll restrictors to try out in the spring.

Thanks. I'm trying to decide whether or not to pre-emptively replace my Spec Stage 3+ with the ClutchNet package when I do a tranny swap over the winter.

Why wouldn't you? I'd replace the clutch if the car is apart anyway, even if it only had a few thousand miles on it. Too much hassle to break it all down.

Also, if the Spec fails, it could damage the internals of your tranny.

general question

general question

Hey, got a question.

I understand how the clutches and pressure plates work, but im not to familiar with them

What do the springs in the clutch disc do?

From what I understand they absorb some of the "shock" when the clutch is engauged, makes it smoother using over all.

Took my spec out becouse the TOB was making a terrible noise.

The springs were starting to go as well. Some of the springs were broke and the metal holding em in snapped off.

That sucks... but at least you verified what you already knew. I'm pretty sure I'll see the same when I get around to pulling my tranny.
