airbag help?

well i am need of replacing my airbags. my trouble is many things though.

i know i need new airbags and module.

but i have heard there is a separate module for drivers and passenger airbag.

also, i have heard that to replace the passenger airbag and cover you need a new dash board.

how much of what im hearing is true and what actually needs to be done to replace my airbags and module after a crash?

Don't need a new cover for the pass. side. There is a little clip that hold the door shut. You do need to remove the dash to install the pass. air bag unit and install the little clips.

My passenger cover had to bent back since the bag was deployed, there was a module for mine under the center console and we replaced the bag on the steering wheel and passenger side behind the cover....

And if you are lucky you can buy everything you need on ebay for dirt cheap. I was going to try to scrap a 99 but when I saw the prices on ebay, I sold it cheap instead.

welll im getting new airbags tomorrow. so ill be atleast attempting to put them in soon
 
well i wasnt able ot get them that day. the guy was to busy to take them out. o well i guess
 
also, does anyone know information on the diagnostic monitor?

Perhaps I can help a bit. What color is your interior? I just replaced the dash in my tour and I have some of the stuff you need. My 99 interior is the gray color so I have an airbag cover in that color, and the little clips that hold it in place. An extra pass air bag came with my JY dash so I have an extra one of those you could have. You are welcome to PM me about this stuff.

After having replaced my dash I think a fellow can just loosen up your dash and disconnect & unbolt the AB from the glove box area after removing it. Then you can also reach the cover bolts. You would need to pull the dash slightly rearward, but I think it can be done that way w/o the total dash removal.

The monitor is in the center console and just because the AB's were deployed doesn't mean anything happened to it. As I understand it's function is to monitor the functionality of the AB and if connected to a new one it would simply see it as a good one ready to function. This is only my interpretation of functions. The crash sensors are what actually set the AB's off so those would need to be replaced for sure.

If needed I could acquire the driver's AB and a monitor, they are available around here easy enough.

How bad was the impact that set them off?

FIRST GET THE FORD CD FOR YOUR YEAR TOUR from TODRAS.
To correct the damage you need to replace the crash sensors, air bags, usually the windshield, the covers for the AB's, and the clips for the pass AB cover.

As someone said the pass AB cover can sometimes be bent back in shape, however a lot of the time, what I have seen in the JY's is, it suffers cuts from the glass as it breaks the windshield.

The crash sensors would be replaced with the rebuilding of the front end / bumper area.

The monitor which is under the e-brake area of the console just checks that everything is ready to function. Remove the rear part of the console then unplug the connector then it is mounted on a bracket.

The drivers AB is held in place by a couple of screws on the back of the steering wheel. Some places it had been stated that the column must be replaced if AB was deployed. I ran across this when I was installing a tilt column in my wife's 95. However, IMHO, I don't believe it applies to all cases, since I checked out everything about the column, by comparing two side by side. Now I guess if someone or something impacted the steering wheel there could be damage to the column as it is designed to collapse a bit. In that case it would need to be replaced. I have not seen that in just the AB going off. Probably a CYA statement by Ford.

The pass side is accessible from below through the glove box area. The whole dash needs to have the retaining bolts (8 iirc) removed to allow it to be manipulated a bit.

well i did the perfect crash to set them off. i hit a large rock on the under side of my car(icy road, 22mph approx.). so the sensors set off the ab from impact because the rock hit the sub-frame and not that bumper. i already have my windshield replaced just need new airbags and sensors i guess.

i have the tan interior(non-leather tan). i can get everything but my drivers side wont be tan. if you can get a tan one at a reasonable price w/ shipping we can talk about it.
 
What is the color code for your interior? I haven't been to the JY in a couple of weeks so I don't know exactly what is available right now. There is usually a selection. PM me for details as it is not proper to discuss prices and deals in this venue.

well for appearance reasons i want to put clip the passanger side cover back down. do i really need to remove the whole dash board or just take it apart enough to take the ab door off and bend it back. taking he whole dash apart seems unnecessary

added. aussieford you had talked about above that you dont really have to. what all do i need to do to clip the cover back down?

Should be able to get at it by removing the glove box... That's how we got my passenger side air bag out... although I was not there to help... if you really wanted to know... PM SVT_22 That's my brother... and he an my dad did most of the work on my car and his car as well... He'd be able to tell you how it goes in and out...

Might be a little bit before he gets back to you, I'll give him a call and tell him to check his CEG, he's living with my parents and they have dial-up, unless he goes to his g/f's house...
