Hi, I had posted last year with a question on the airbag code and havent fixed it and now due for inspection so REALLY need to fix it now...O:) Since then my daughter has taken the 1998 Contour SE to School and told me when she returned of course that the Temp Guage is 'stuck'. It never drops down to cold. I am in upstate NY so it should. FYI there are no issues with coolant loss, perculating (head gasket) and heater works fine. I have checked the battery, tried disconnecting it and checking some connections, but do not see anything obvious for either. These happened long apart so not related, just posting in the same post to save time. I know the code 52 says the cap for the diag module is not charging up in the 45 sec it should take. Is there an easy way to get at the thing to check it out. I Think it is under the radio...any help or suggestions are welcomed! Thanks as always!
Just FYI I pulled the radio and still cant see the module...any ideas?

Still need help

Still need help

Anyone that can help with this would be appreciated...I tried taking apart console, but still can't seem to locate airbag diag module. It looks like I might have to remove the shifter to remove the cover that is stopping the other cover that has the lighter in it to get at the area behind the console...does this sound right?

If the Diagnostic Monitor is what you are looking for, it is behind the radio. Follow the steps to remove the radio and instrument panel and you should be good to go.

Just adding some info in case anyone searches in the future:

In 99 or 00 the Diagnostic Monitor was relocated to under the center console, below the e-brake. My 00 SVT has it under the e-brake while my 98 is behind the cupholder area, below the radio.

Think I finally got it

Think I finally got it

OK, thanks for the info...just to be sure since it isn't labeled, is it about 4"x6" and blue in color with two connectors on it? Thats what is directly behind the cupholders after i finally got all the covers off...thanks! Also, any ideas on the temp guage issue? It starts out at halfway on the guage and rises to hot but no other symptoms and never gets down to cold..even after car sits overnight.
Really appreciate the help!!!

I think that's it.

Need a new Coolant Temperature Gauge Sending Unit.
If it is a V6, look at this thread.

Airbag 52 fixed...Thanks! still need help on temp guage

Guys...thank very very much for the help on the Airbag diag module..was able to get one from the j yard and it fixed it, even though no visable defect on original one. Before I go replacing the temp guage sending unit I want to be sure thats it. I can better describe the symptom now and here it is:

- Gauge sits at just below halfway between hot and cold on the cold engine.
- Upon turning the key the guage drops to cold and then rises back up to halfway within 10 seconds, and then progresses up from there as engine warms.
- I tried disconnecting the Coolant temp sensor and same symptoms.

Tony,
you called it a Coolant Temperature Gauge Sending Unit...is that the same thing as the Engine coolant temperature sensor?
Hope that helps you help me!
Thanks again!!!!

The Temperature Gauge Sending Unit (or Coolant Temperature Gauge Sender) is NOT the same as the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor.

Do you have V6 Duratec 6 cylinder or I4 Zetec 4 cylinder? You should include this in your signature.

Read this for V6.

4 cyl Zetec

4 cyl Zetec

Very sorry...it is a 1998 SE 4 cyl Zetec 2.0 stock engine, no modifications. Thanks for the clarification...whew, almost went to take it out!

Can you tell me where it maigt be located on the v4 and if the symptoms seem to match the failing unit?
