4 Problems, please help

Yea, it is either rusted out OR he may have tightened it too much. I read the instructions that came with the new part and it did say the torque specs, and they also said, it may feel loose when it is installed correctly.
Either way, this may take tonight and tomorrow night. It is a scary looking job.

Done!

Done!

Power steering is done!! Finally! 1 Power steering pump, and 2 pressure hoses later!

The reverse light stopped working again, so we will still have to check out the wiring again.

1 more problem before we got my Tour back home. He was checking and making sure that the power steering wasn't leaking before we took my Tour out of the garage. He took it off of the jacks and away I went. As I got home, I didn't ever remember him tightening up the lugnuts on my driver wheel or giving me the key back. So I called him and checked to see if he had the key. Oh no!!!!! Yep, he was checking to see if the power steering hoses didn't leak so much that he forgot about the damn key! So, it's somewhere between his shop and my house (and the gas station).
So now we have to see if we can get another key, or we will have to take off the 3 lug nuts that need the key.

Either way, she's back!

Lug nut Key

Lug nut Key

As soon as I got home, and I thought about it (I never seen him tighten the lugnuts, I thought maybe I forgot or something). So I called him right away to see if he did. And he told me he did not. So, he went back to his shop and checked his shop for the key (even the power tools we used), and it was no where in sight. So, he went outside and tried to look all over his yard (it's full of leaves, so it would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack) and didn't find it anywhere. So, we are going to have to take off the 3 other lugnuts, and replace them with regular lugnuts.

BUT - There is one strange thing going on (in my opinion). Ever since all of this work has been done, when I press on the gas pedal, it sounds like a loud whirling sound. My friend told me it was the new power steering pump. I am ok with this answer, but wow. It is loud to me. I would almost say it doesn't sound very normal. Anyone have any thoughts on this new sound? Seriously, it sounds like a whirling/houling noise. Does the power steering pump need to be so loud? This sound happens anytime I press on the gas. In park, driving, anytime. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Post a sound clip.

Make sure the steering fluid level is correct. My father put a rebuilt steering pump in his Mercury Sable, and it always whined, but less with some use. If there is air in the system, it can be noisy too.

CG, I'm very impressed with your knowledge and attitude and dedication to your Contour. I've owned a LOT of Fords over the years, and every one of them had a whiney PS pump, even new replacement pumps. It is correct that there could be air in the lines. Slowly turning the wheel all the way to the left then all the way to the right several times will help to get the air out. Just do it slowly so as not to hit either limit hard as that could damage the rack and pinion unit. If it still whines, put in some Lucas power steering treatment...it will help. Keep fighting the good fight!!!

Someone Broke my Driverside Window

Someone Broke my Driverside Window

Yep, as it begins. I thought I could finally have a weekend where I don't have to work on the Tour right? After work, we decided to go have a drink, as I work in Uptown (in Minneapolis) and didn't feel like fighting traffic. So, we decided to walk to the bars. I was gone 2-3 hours, and came back to car and my drivers side window was broken, and they stole my cd player. So, it was really nice to have to get the glass off of the seat before I could drive home.
I replaced the window first thing Saturday morning. $67 for the window at a local junk yard. I had to drive about 45 minutes to get there, and also picked up a new cd player.

I guess I learned my lesson. I should have parked in the back of my work (locked 8 foot fenced in cage sorta deal, with the barb wire at the top). I didn't even think of the crime when I left my car there. They even left all of my belongings in the back seat. I had my cd case back there with at least 100 cd's in it, and a new pair of shoes I am still going to return now (new window = shoes go back). So, when I bought the cd player Saturday, they didn't sell me the correct connection cable so I had to go back today. I have it in, but it isn't complete yet. I think I am missing the mounting bracket and Best Buy doesn't sell it. So, I will search around tomorrow. And I also bought a MP3 player and downloaded most of my music on it, and the cd player has a detachable face so I will remember to remove both when I leave my car.

Anyway, lesson learned. Maybe next weekend I won't have this problem again.

Oh yea, thanks for the positive post gearhead.
