I'm having an impossible time with an EGR problem and am ready to call it quits and take it to a dealer. I'd like one where I can review what I've done and they can take it from there. I understand they want to follow their diagnostics procedures (I ran them from the ford CD) and verify what I found but I just don't want them changing parts only to find it wasn't the problem.

I'm in Leesburg and work in Chantilly so either of those would be convenient but I'm willing to drive to any other dealer if it comes with a CEG recommendation. The name of a mechanic to ask for would be even better.

Help!

Mike

Didn't get a recommendation so I went to Jerry's ford in Leesburg. As I dropped my car off I didn't notice an emission inspection sign so I asked if they were a certified emission inspection station. I was shocked when they told me they weren't! That means that even if they spent $1000 on the repairs and didn't fix the problem (like replace the wire harness) they couldn't do a waiver to the emission test.

Decided to go to a certified local station and let them have a crack at it. At least I'm capped at $680.00 (for a 95 car, am I crazy?)

No.

My car is worth about $1,300. I spent about $2200 last year and have spent $1,900 so far this year on maintenance and repairs. It is still much cheaper than a new car.

Took it to a local shop that I've used before. (Auto solutions on King street in downtown Leesburg) Gave them the results of my testing, receipts for the parts etc and explained the problem. Told them to fix it or stop when the charges would allow the waiver. They said they would look into it. Got a call a couple of days later. Car passed emissions. Total bill 28 dollars. Said light wasn't on when they tested, it's a 95 so no stored code check required. Gave them the equivalent of a blank check and they didn't take advantage of me. Not all shops are clueless or ripoffs.
