Automatic in a 98 Contour. Transmission finally died. Pulled the tranny out and had a transmission shop repair it. They said they ran it on a dyno and said it worked good. Installed back into the car. While putting it back in broke the VSS sensor. Haven't put in a new one yet but wanted to drive it around the block to see how she worked. Shifting was erratic and seemed to never shift into 3rd or 4th.

My question is will a broken VSS effect shifting? Does it feedback to the tranny to help with shifting?

Yes, assuming you're talking about the ATX, your car uses the data from the VSS to determine when to shift. Your speed, throttle, and RPM determine when to shift.

TSS mainly used to tell when converter locked up. Its' output can be compared to the no slip output of VSS to determine other conditions too.

And yes zorrex it does come into play in shift quality too.

i have a 98 se and one day the trans whould not move the car at all. come to find out it was a speed sencer i forgot witch one for there are two
