hi guys,

i've got a 2000 contour se sport v6. i just replaced the fuel pump at 83k.
what can i expect to fix/replace over the next 25-30k miles? water pump?

the car sometimes makes this grinding noise while starting and fails to start. my current fix for this is to wait 5 minutes and try again. searching on the forums suggests that i should replace the starter. i think im going to wait on that until it happens more frequently.

any recommended maintenance i should be doing now? atx service? radiator flush?

thanks.

Sounds like the starter. My brothers SVT did the same thing and he used to be able to wait a few minutes before it would catch the flywheel. Eventually, it just kept grinding and he had to get it towed to a dealership. They were going to cut him a deal of $550 for a starter replacement. :blackeye: He was able to talk him down to $350 only because he works inside the dealership with Enterprise.

Your car probably has the revised waterpump, so I dont think you need to replace it.

Be advised.. repeated grinding from the starter to the flywheel could turn a relatively cheap (new starter) replacement in to an expensive one (drop subframe/tranny or pull engine/tranny and get a new flywheel, too) in a hurry.

I'd replace it.. period.

Listen to Ray..

my Mystique chewed up another flywheel. New starter and flywheel 2 yrs. or so ago. The "screeeeech from hell" has returned. Sure sh*t,,,flywheel again.

But why ?? WHY !!!!!!!

As I was reading the thread, I thought..."chewed up flywheel" also.

Don't EVER ask "what can go wrong next?"

That just begs an answer.

If the car has the original struts, you should get ready to replace them (including mounts) at about 100K. That same mileage is also when the timing belt is due to be replaced.

Duratec = timing chanin

Zetec = Belt.

A chain is somewhat more of a power-waster compared to a nylon belt. Zetecs don't exactly have power to spare.

Besides, timing chains aren't totally maintenance-free. Though it seems like a pain to replace the belt every 60-100,000 miles, chains can stretch over time and often have tensioner issues.

That said, most manufacturers are switching to chain drive so they can advertise lower long-term ownership costs.
