Weird way to start it

I have a '95 Contour GL, 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder automatic. I just bought it less than a couple weeks ago, and when I got it, had no problems starting it. Turn the key, car starts, simple. However, last Friday, after work, turned the key, nothing. No sounds, no cranking, but all the lights on the dash worked, as well as the radio, headlights, and power locks (no power windows). My husband came out, tried to jumpstart it, still nothing. Rooting around under the driver's console, he found a couple of wires stuck together in some kind of connector with a little black button on the end. He held the button down, turned the key, and presto, I have ignition. Now, I have looked through the owner's manual, and it references a fuel pump shutoff switch that can be used after a collision, but that spot where it says it should be is empty. And when my husband tried to fix the "kill switch" (his term) by taping the button down so I wouldn't have to push it every time I want to start the car, it caused the power locks to go crazy on my car while it is on. I don't want to risk frying the electrical or brain in the car, so for now he has it untaped and sticking out of a small crack in dashboard of the car. I have to press it and hold it in until the car is started.

My step-father, who is a mechanic, without looking at the car, after hearing my description, says it sounds like the previous owner removed the alarm system and jury-rigged the starter wires. I do have stickers on the windows that mention a "Ford Anti-Theft System", but see no evidence that there was ever an actual alarm system. My key does not have a chip, no remote start, no dash light showing alarm activation, and no light on the instrument cluster that lights up showing any kids of PATS. I am at a loss. I don't want to have to keep pushing a plunger to start my car (though my hubby insists that would be a great anti-theft device since they can't start it without doing this), and worry about what long-term damage this can do. I can't afford the hundreds of dollars my step-dad says it would cost to completely rewire the car.

Hubby, though only a backyard mechanic, says it can't be the wiring harness, it can't be the grounding wire, gives me a list of all the things it CAN'T be, or else it wouldn't start with the button, but has no clue what it CAN be. Are there any other options that you can think of? I know it's only a '95 and has had a couple of problems, but I fell in love with the car the moment I first drove it, and want to keep it. Any advice posted is very much appreciated.

Thanks, Shannon

if it is a ford alarm and you had to press the button to make the car start it is most likely still installed. There should be a blinking led somewhere that is the system indicator/valet switch. you need to locate this and press it so that it doulbe blinks. this puts the alarm in valet mod.

Also hcek behind the glove box for the keyless entry module. if you have one the Ford alarm would be connected to it. You can get remotes off ebay and that will let you control the alarm from the factory keyless entry.

also the way the alarm works is it will disable the started after one minute. I do believe this can be disabled by changing switch setting in the control unit of the alarm.

It's not the fuel switch. That is a recessed red button behind the panel (there's a hole in the panel to push it) and as you know, only trips after a collision or impact.

Trace the kill switch. Does it lead to a control box? It sounds like you still have the keyless entry, but just was not given the remotes.

My dealer-installed keyless entry (Ford "System 1") had an ignition kill switch. You had to push that button the same way you describe, if you did not unlock the car using the remote. For me, the control box was tucked behind that panel a few inches away from that button. It was black and had a large "Ford oval" sticker on it.

The behavior you describe is consistent with the dealer-installed keyless entry system, but could also describe an aftermarket system. I'm curious to know how the car has power locks but not windows. This is rare (or never existed). It is possible that the locks were installed at a later time along with the keyless entry.

If the keyless entry was removed, then that button would be useless; I greatly suspect that it is still there.

power locks with manual windows was not uncommon for the pre98 GL models. My 97 is the same way.

i do agree that it does sound like its a dealer installed system, although why you would do that to a base model GL im not sure.

oh wow, you learn something new every day. I stand by the rest of my comments though. :)

re: BrApple, I think it sounds like a keyless entry system, rather than alarm, since you didn't find any LEDs on the dashboard.

I'm going to trace the wires this weekend and if they go to a control box, I'll head to a local Ford Dealer and see if they can provide me with a keyless entry remote. If that's not it, I'll keep trying. Very good suggestions, thank you all!

too bad its not a toggle switch. then you could leave it in the "on" position normally but in the "off" position when youre in a bad neighborhood. or when you feel like leaving your keys in the car for some reason

Ford will want money for remotes, if they still stock them. When you trace the wires, post pictures of what you see, or give a description.

As Brapple said, the factory keyless entry was located behind the glove box (and a dealer-installed alarm would tie into it). The dealer-installed keyless entry had its own separate FCC ID for the remotes, and of course aftermarket systems have their own too.

The remote FCC ID for factory keyless on my '99 is GQ43VT4T
The remote FCC ID for dealer-installed keyless on my old '98 is GOH-3BFM2497

Even without tracing the wires I believe it's highly plausible that remote keyless entry is the trouble, which would explain why the power door locks go nuts when the button on those wires is taped down to a constant "on" position. I'll get pics of anything I find-thanks!

I did look on ebay, and found remotes that supposedly would work for the car, though they do state that they are not originals, but clones. If it's the keyless entry, would it matter if I went to Ford to buy the remotes, or get them aftermarket from someplace like ebay and program them?

BTW, you guys are awesome-thank you so much for the help. :) Shannon
