Waterpump pulley/belt?

Hey guys,

This morning my SVT started squealing really loud. It just started doing it as soon as I started her up. Anyways, it is coming from the waterpump pulley/belt area. I have no idea what would cause a squeal this loud, but the belt doesn't look bad at all. Do old belts just start squealing? Does this mean that I just need to replace the belt? Or do you think this could be a pulley problem or something? My waterpump is working fine.

Any help is appreciated. I drove about 200 miles today and the squealing didn't go away at all.

Thanks,

Jeff

It could be the belt, tensioner or WP. Change the belt first (should take you less than 5 minutes. 3 bolts for the WP cover, push tensioner in, take out old WP belt, put in new WP belt, reinstall WP cover). The DAYCO brand belt (sold at Autozone or Advance) costs $12.

Edit. DAYCO Part No. #5030268.

Thanks Tony. With my experience working on cars, I have never had a belt squeal on any of them! I am new to the world of squealing belts! :)

Welcome to the world of Contours! .

In all seriousness, I have had squeeling belts in all the 10 vehicles I have owned in the past.

I always laughed at people in old beaters that were driving around with the most horrendous loud squealing ever... now that person is me at the red light. :( Hopefully the belt today will take care of it. I replaced the waterpump less than a year ago, so it is looking like the belt or the belt tensioner pulley.

Anyways,

Thanks again.

Better check your WP also. If the plastic impeller has broken it may be binding against the internal housing, causing your belt to slip.

The belt comes off real easy. No tools needed. Hand pressure is enough to puch the tensioner enough to slip off the belt.

Once the belt is off, spin the tensioner pulley and water pump by hand. If you have a bad bearing in either it should be obvious. If the tensioner is messed up and isn't holding the belt tight enough that should also be obvious. Sometimes the tensioner can be restored with penitrating oil.

Sell your car and buy foreign. End of story.

No thank you... I like having a car that always needs stuff replaced and is a pain in the butt to work on. :) At least this was an easy fix! I should replace my waterpump so I don't get stranded like I did in my SE. Especially because it is a cheap and simple preventitive.
