I don't know about that. They were DAMN slow in my opinion when I drove a couple. My mother's 2006 TDI is much faster. My uncle had an '04 and he traded it in for an '06 because it was so much better. I know for a fact that the stock SVT is a quicker than the '06 TDI, but they are a big step up from the MKIV TDI. The big difference is the 4-speed auto vs. the new 6-speed DSG. God I love that transmission. I can only imagine what it would be like in a 2.0T. It's too bad they dropped the 2.0T.
Multiple media outlets have coined it the best automatic trans on the market and call it a clutchless manual. They re-engineered the TDI in '07 for ultra low sulfur diesel and the new one has a lot more power than the '06 did. I'd be curious to know if they can still get 60 MPG like my mother's can. My girlfriend works with diesel catalysts and the new 2010 emissions that everything had to be designed for are very restrictive and it was hard for a lot of companies to get in compliance, so who knows what suffered. Obviously power didn't since I think it is up to 140/235 from 100/177.
