I've been told I need a new 02 sensor on my '98 SE V6. This is the sensor that monitors the cat performance (old one got knocked off by ice or some such under the car)

Ford wants $165 plus $150 to install it...

Is it reasonable to get a used part to save some $$$?

Thanks,

Dallas

No.....buying a used o2 sensor will not help you...as you will have to replace it later.....your better off going to an Indy shop that dose Emissions work...it'll cost ya less

Never Ever go to a Ford service shop...they will rip you off & mess-up your car.

WWW.rockauto.com sells them for about $70. Install yourself with tools (about $60) and how to here. Which O2 sensor? Bank 2 (Radiator side) Upper or Lower, Bank 1 (Firewall side) Upper or Lower?

Thanks guys... ended up getting an aftermarket part for quite a bit less.

Cheers

From what he said it would be the lower o2's. Should just eliminate them.. then you won't have to worry about it again.

I just grabbed them off my parts car before I had it towed away....just in case I am in a pinch and don't have access to one when I really need one. I don't expect it to last very long if I do have to change it.

I'm sorry but this is not always true ... when I took my car in to have the AC fixed everything went very smoothly and I was charged what I considered a reasonable amount for the repair ... I would go back to this dealer again as they where very professional ...

+1. I agree with this statement. I have had good and bad experience with dealers and indys or national chains. Yes, there are some dealers and indys or chains I would go back in a heartbeat. As for dealers and chains, most times, they are independent operators.

A good mechanic is where you find him. Sometimes thats in an independant shop and sometimes its in a dealership.

A bad mechanic is where you find him. Sometimes that in an independent shop and sometimes its in a dealership.

Some dealerships are dealerships and some are stealerships.

Some independent shops are professional and some are hack shops.

If it's a lower you just need a big crescent if you lack in tools. Or borrow one. Too easy to replace to have a shop do it. Takes 5 minutes. $150 is 2 hours labor!!!!!! Con artists!

Speaking of used O2 sensors, is there any value in one that got replaced? The dealership that did mine gave me the old one back and I haven't tossed it yet.

They may have done that just to show that they did indeed replace the item. The tech might've been watching the latest news sting on Jiffy Lube and got skeered. C.Y.A.
