When I hit the button on the keyfob it just unlocks.. not sure if it's supposed to spring open when you hit it? Then when I pull it up I have to push it 101% open for it to stay otherwise it comes crashing down. On my driveway or any other kind of grade, forget it.

What do I need to replace for it to open like it should?

Find some good trunk shocks and it should fix your problem. They sounds worn out. Mine used to do the same.

Geez how did I miss those? I swear I didn't see anything when I looked up there earlier. Just did some research, popped my trunk, and there they were plain as day. Ironically while looking around the trunk came down and smashed my back..

The trunk does not pop open. It should open enough that the lid can be lifted open and not get stuck on the latch.

I hear that. I have a permanant scar across the bridge of my nose where mine came down one fine winter's day. Wow, that hurt!!

Thanks to this forum, I got some new lift supports installed (Monroe 901342). End of story.

Neither of my two Contours ever had a gas shock for the trunk installed - '95 Tour and '98.5 SVT. No mounting knuckle for a gas strut anywhere to be found. I have a right hinge assy from a '98 SVT parts car, and clearly see where this strut mounts. My '95 Tour has the "spring assist" that does pop up the trunk a couple of inches.

Heck my trunk doesn't even pop. I can pull the release, close the door, and the trunk is locked again. Talk about sensitive...
