in the five months it took me to find a decently priced and low mileage transmission for my car i did a little research and spent some time at the ford parts counter. i found that there's more to our transmissions than just finding one from the same year car. to the best of my knowledge any transmission from 95 to 97 will swap out as long as the engine is the same. i'm not sure about how well the cable shifters and rod shifters on the manual transmission will interchange, meaning i don't know if there are any major modifications needed to swap them. hopefully one of the guru's can clarify this. starting with the 98 model you need to make sure that the first 4 digits in the transmission ID number match for the automatic transmissions. this number can be found on the bottom of the transmission pan and on a sticker on the backside of the transmission housing. in my case i have a 98 SE with a zetec engine, my trans ID# was F83P-DA so i needed to find another F83P-DA or i could use a F83P-DB. another example is if you have a 98 SE with a V6 and a trans ID# F73P-AA you need another F73P-AA or you can use a F73P-AB. the next thing to note is if you have a 2000 you have to use a transmission another 2000. following is a list of all of the transmissions found in the ford contour from 1995 to 2000. this list is the same for the mercury mystique. please anyone with anymore info on this subject please fell free to chime in, especially in the case of the rod and cable shifters. thanks and i hope someone finds this useful.

Ok, this is a great compat. list my question is what is the difference between the CB and the CA that's what i need to know while hunting anew Tranny. Can you help I need a need a tranny ASAP.

Thanks
HalfBreed

i was never able to get a complete answer on that. on trans shop said it had to do with different internal parts that had been upgraded as the cars were built. so long as the first four digits are the same on your trans mission and your replacement it'll work.
