Anyknow know of one that does good work? I'm tired of the crunchy bull:censored::censored::censored::censored: that my trans has exhibited from day one of me owning the car. Its getting hard to put into reverse and frequently tires to pop out of first gear and grind and make me look like I can't drive. I am willing to bet that when ford swapped the trans before I bought the car from ted that they didn't put it back correctly.

Luca drove the car at the lancaster meet when i dyno'ed probably two years ago now and i remember you saying it felt strange. I've driven probably half a dozen svt's since then and all have felt much smoother.

So looks like i'm stuck either buying an HMS trans and selling my liver to pay for it or find a shop locally.

from what i've been reading doug, the guys out in michigan are suggesting this other place over hms:shrug:
also, there's a built tranny for sale in the classifieds.

my bad...liberty trans, its in detroit. either hms or liberty you'll have to do some shipping. and from todra's has been saying, its cheaper and the qaulity seems to be "as good"
what have you been up too?? havent seen you around here...at all? going to afn?

They did mine... Maybe a bit far for you Doug but it's closer then Detroit.

They did your LSD? If i get the trans fixed an LSD is going on. I just hear all these stories about people getting a ton of gear rollover noise after having their trans worked on. I want it silent and smooth... wonder if anyone else aside from terry knows how to do the 'slick shift' junk.

you want it silent then use the oem clutch/flywheel.

personally, i wouldn't take it to an independent shop. not because i think they're bad, just because...how many independent mechanics actually have that much experience tearing the mtx-75 to pieces and putting it all back together?

i think your best bet, sorry to say, is a dealer...or an HMS box.

the mtx75 is actually a pretty common tranny. contour/mystique:95-00/cougar99-02/focus:currently/zx2

the only on the list i havent owned was a cougar..all the others i've had in five speed....i'd be willing to say theirs a good number of five speeds

all i'm saying is when you go to a ford dealer and there's only one mechanic in the whole place that is "certified" to work on these, then an indy shop may not be your best bet.

I understand that you have only owned only manuals, but the actual percentage of those on the road vs. automatics is not very much. just take a peek whenever you see one in a parking lot. but whatever...at this point, if the OP is planning on keeping the car for a while, i would go with the HMS trans.

I do plan on keeping the car for awhile, that is until it starts costing me more money then it would be to get a new one. I just don't know if i can take the down time and shipping and install and price on an hms trans.

all im saying is the mtx75 isn't some super sequential gearbox..its a covential fwd transaxle...it wont take someone w/a automotive engineering degree to rebuilt a gear or two:shrug:

I hope not. I'm going to give brian's place a call monday and see what they have to say. I have another car i can roll with for a few days but I am getting nervous throwing upwards of 2 grand into a car that will probably hit 100k next week... even though it doesn't have any major problems (aside from fwd and slow)

sigh...im not gonna argue with you man. i've been through it with my car. even taking it to a dealership i had to take the time to explain why they needed to use a zetec speedo gear with the quaife, and provide them with the proper part number cause they wouldn't find it. we also had a hard time tracking down the right shim kit and bearings for the rebuild as well.

ifi wasn't on top of them about it being right, it would have been a good opportunity for them to cut corners.

even still i wouldn't want someone popping their cherry on my car. i wouldn't want problems popping up a couple years down the road, especially with the cost of the rebuild and parts.

yeah i know. you have a big decision to make. at the time i did mine, we we're still boycotting HMS, but even still i would have had to find a shop to install the new trans. If there's one in the classifieds that's already put together, you may want to look into that. you should be able to sell the stock one for a little $$$$

just my 2 cents here doug since you know i have been around the block with these cars and i have seen several rebuilds that were done on other peoples cars. Do yourself a big favor and if the guy where checkeredsvt took his contour is willing to do it take it there his work was superb in my opinion, the trans sounded and acted just like my trans that i got out of a cougar with less then 10k miles on it. to me this guy knows what he is doing. on the other hand i seen real bad jobs were syncroze were not installed right and it was a :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: shifting the car to techs that did not bleed the clutch master out right and your pedal now sits almost on the floor forcing you to replace it which is another pain in the you know what. if i had to take a pick out of the 2 peoples cars that i drove that had rebuilt trans in them penntwo's and checkered i would half to say without a doubt checkered was put together with precision. Oh and one last thing the mtx75 will always have a wonderful chatter that never seems to go away it is just the harmonics of the drive train. to prove my point on this with the clutch not engaged and the car running obvisouly try easliy putting the car in 1st gear and wallahhh no more chatter since your putting force on the loosly hanging selecting forks in the trans.

"As good" ? Try better. They'll actually replace the parts they quote you for...

are you saying that you think glens car was done improperly?

still, all the points you mention are why, in my mind, you would want someone with some real experience with these cars. I haven't heard about liberty, but if the MI folks are saying good things, then you can be sure they deliver.
