Not 100% sure about the 2.0L, But its my understanding that if you have a lift available, it is much easier to drop the trans and motor from below, than to pull from the top.
At the factory they were installed form the bottom up.
From all the shops I have talked to, they remove from the top. Simply because they have a lift to do so. But, the tranny can be removed from the top.
From my understanding... You will put the car up on jackstands. Disconnect everything from engine and tranny. Remove the engine, then the tranny.
NOW! Compared to dropping from below... All you do is disconnect everything (electrical and fluid connections, mounting bolts and nuts for the subframe and upper strut assy) and pick the car up. Then remove the tranny from the frame and motor.
Basically though, if you don't have a lift at home, you will have to bring up through the top.
If you are just changing the flex plate then pull the motor from the top and leave the tranny in. This way you don’t have to pull the axles and suspension. Also, while you have the engine out it would be a good time to replace the rack and pinion especially if you are over 100k mi. Otherwise when it goes you will have to drop the sub-frame and that’s no picnic.
To be clear, you would drop the engine from the bottom with the tranny if that is what you wanted to do. It is far easier to get a hoist and pull the engine or engine and tranny as a unit from the top in a conventional manner. You would need a lot more then some jack stands to lower the sub frame and engine from the bottom. For example; you would need a transmission jack and something to lift the engine back up during the install.
