Trans Mount or Roll restrictor?

ok guys the egr problem has been resolved.. a lil bit of cleaning and using some injector cleaner solved that.. thx..

i had another issue and i think its the tranny mount or restrictor... I didnt have a chance to really look yet though..

I know i have to remove the MAF and airbox to find it but from what ive been reading we have a 1 front transmission mount and 1 front roll restrictor? what has me confused it that some people said the mount and restrictor are the same thing and some say they are seperate..what is what?

what i noticed with my car is that ONLY on slow start off's and when i turn sometimes its a rattle like the transmission is knocking around or loose.. basically its like the rattle will come when the car wants to be in a lower/higher gear due to the speed im going. since its not, its like the transmission moves around (rattles) to compensate for the extra work its doing. the car shifts fine, and doesnt rattle or anything when i do anything else.

The best example i can give is this:

lets say im making a righthand turn and im in 3rd gear and i think i can carry my speed im going through the turn, but low and behold i have to slow to less than 20-25mph and i should shift to 2nd.. BUT lets say i dont and i go thru in 3rd.. now then is where the transmission will rattle and once i get back up to speed it stops. What my guess is, is that the strain thats on the tranny is making it rattle around until it can smoothe out... what i did to test my theory was i went around the same corner again in 2nd and its not a squeak. then i even tried starting off from a stop. when i start off, unless its a perfect start it will rattle just a little. To further prove that, the amount of time it will rattle is in conjunction to how smoothe the shifts are and what gear the transmission should be in at a certain speed.. smoothe starts/shifts = no rattle... i can feel the transmission persay when i shift/drive around and im tellin u its smoothe..

I cant provide a sound clip but i think i can rule out a throw out bearing since that was recently replaced and the symptoms of the problem doesnt seem like thats the case. (i read that if it was the car would rattle all the time, even when u have the clutch in etc)

I thought i saw the bolt missing when i was cleaning out my egr but i rly wasnt looking since it was kinda dark. I thought i saw the bolt missin before awhile back when i first started hearing the rattle but wasnt to sure then.

this weekend im going to have time to fk around and look, so my question is:

1.what do i look for? the roll restrictor or the mount?

2.what do they both look like?

3.also would i be able to look at both if i remove the MAF and air filter?

4. Where can i find a replacement bolt if needed? i kno for the restrictor i can go to BAT or that other place that i forget right now..

thx

of note that damn rattle sure did help me learn when the car likes to be in a certain gear at a certain speed heh...

Well, here is my explanation....

I say there are two mounts and two roll restrictors.

The mounts are located on each of the wheel wells and hold the weight of the engine from above. These are both rather large and I doubt are the cause of your problem.

Now the roll restrictors could be the problem and you can look at both without any disassembly under the hood.

Assume all view directions are from standing in front of the car....

You should be able to just take off the plastic spash shield that runs along front of the car and see the front roll restrictor. It is right below the water pump and bolts the engine/trans assembly to the frame rail.

The rear is in almost the same location on the back side of the engine and you should be able to get a good look at it from either side of the car just by shineing a flash light on it. Jack up the car and crawl under if you want a closer look. (Note: I do not recall how good of a view you can get with the stock y-pipe in place.)

The transmission mount suspends the transmission from the fenderwell. The engine mount is on the opposite side.

The roll restrictors do exactly what their name implies: Restrict drivetrain roll on the fore and aft axis.
