Trans issues

I just replaced the clutch in my cousins which is a 96 2.5L. We got it all back together and couldnt get it started, figured out that it was the nuetral switch in the clutch. So we push started it, popped the clutch and heard a loud pop. It will now go in gear but when in gear the wheels still spin freely like it is in nuetral. Does anyone know what could be going on?

maybe you don't have an axle in all the way.

I dont know because every once in awhile we could get the wheels to catch, but its almost like its sitting in a flat spot on a gear or something.
