I've been searching high and low for information regarding door removal, tranny removal, and steering wheel removal.

I am wondering what tools I will need to bring to the yard to harvest a 98+ MTX 75 Transmission (gonna rebuild w/ LSD) and both driver side doors(mine have developed cancer and I found perfect ones) and a perfect steering wheel.

I had days when I've forgotten tools and it's a P.I.T.A. so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if requested, would a how to for any/all of these projects be helpful to our members?

Thanks,

Kevin

a set of metric wrenches, metric shallow and deep sockets (1/4", 3/8", and some 1.2"), cheater pipe for those really stuck bolts, PB blaster, pry bars, hammers (dead blow, 5lb mini-sledge)

Not a bad list. You def want the pry bars and a cheater bar for your 1/2" ratchet.

I've removed several nice leather steering wheels in the past and if memory serves me correct, you need a small torx bit to remove the 4 bolts that hold the airbag to the wheel. I have an entire set so I can't remember the actual number. Once you remove the air bag there's only a 14 or 15 mm bolt that hold the wheel on. You'll need the key's to rotate the wheel (better access for the torx bits) and it needs to lock in place to break the single bolt that holds it on. Really a 5 minute procedure and you can remove the cruise control buttons if they try and charge you more.

If the key's are gone go hunting for other Contours with keys in the yard. I once had to try 3 different keys and finally found one that would work. Don't ask me how but this key actually worked in two completely different cars.

No way I'd pull a trans. though! Good luck with that one.

transmission I would leave to the yard to pull honestly ....

It's a u pull it place and it's only costing me $75. So I think it's worth it to me to be able to build this tranny up in the garage and put it on when needed

A rockstar and a pack of smokes aswell.

2 cans of Skoal, lots of H20, and multiple explicit words!

No Keys in this yard. Can it still be done?

Why does everybody keep saying don't do the tranny. I know I'm fearless when it comes to this stuff or maybe just stupid, we'll see soon.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Still wondering what size torx bit I'm gonna need for the door, gonna have to buy those tools.

Also should I do How-To's for all these projects since it's going to be in a yard setting. Will it help others?

Thanks again to all

Pulling a trans is a PITA but is doable. I pulled one in November at a Pick and Pull without too much trouble. Depends on what your time is worth, it took me most of a day to do.

Other tools to bring are an assortment of screwdrivers, hacksaw or knife, torx bits and some type of chisel -large screwdriver to ease getting out the balljoints.

I have an idea.
Are you going to use these parts to replace the ones you have on your own car?
Practice yanking the old parts off of your car first. That'll give you a good idea of what tools you'll need, and what you'll be up against once you go retrieve the u-pull parts.

The lesson I learned on my last trip to the upull was that a good cordless drill and recip saw, and or angle grinder would have saved the day. Learned this the hard way too because when I went back to the yard a week later with the tools I needed, all geeked up and ready to hack stuff up, the car was gone . The guy told me the car was sent to the crusher, with my tan leather seats still inside, and a lot of other good stuff too. I couldn't believe it.

A good pair of vicegrips are invaluable and some side cutters for any miscellaneous wires. The last pull a part I went to had all the engines and trans dropped under the cars. That would make getting the trans a snap.

Went to the yard today and found many things. The tranny will work just didn't do it today it was too cold and I got there late.

I couldn't get the steering wheel off that I wanted so I'm probably going back tomorrow. Also found a MNB wheel and airbag in perfect condition. If someone wants it I'll pull it for them, let me know.

Also picked up many misc parts and some for the stockpile, anybody have any requests.

Thanks for all the help and please give me more ideas for the steering wheel. I'm taking my car to my mechanic tomorrow morning for a LOF and general checkup, I'm gonna ask him his thoughts on pulling the wheel too.

To Frenchbluec2 - good idea but i'd rather get my practice in at the yard then on my own car first. I'd much rather break something that is not mine yet, which I assume you would do to. Also the only reason I'm asking about tools is because mine disappeared this summer and I'm slowly replacing things as needed, I'd rather put cash into my car than into tools that I don't need at the moment.

Thanks again to all

I am attending wyotech and my car that i am working on a 98 gl. sad i know but ive learned alot about the car, i will find out the torx bit size on the check strap on the door for you, if you need any other info that i can check on for you let me know...im not too sure if i could get away with much in the engine compartment but anything else let me know.
