i have a 99 csvt with a Haines custom trans. all the usual fixins.
i added a Spec flywheel and Stage 3 clutch.

very soon after i finished the 3L build and put in the rebuilt Haines trans i sold the car to my buddy who wreaked havoc on the poor car. we suspected the syncros were damaged because the car would grind gear when shifting.

i ended up getting the car back.

my buddy, john-the-sho-guy offered to pull the trans out for free because he felt i got shafted with my reaquisition of the car. a fellow cobra owner works at a trans shop. he told me i could bring the car by to get an estimate and for his boss (shop owner) to figure out what's wrong. i told him my buddy would pull the trans out and i would bring it in (with my truck) when i was ready to have the work done. he said that should really help in cutting down the cost to repair it.

i took the car there yesterday and his boss confirmed its the syncros. he showed me that the shifter grommet was missing and the car has about an inch of play when shifting, which contributed to the syncros getting damaged.

the other cobra owner, and i reiterated, that i would just bring the trans in for the repair. he quoted me $578 labor, plus parts, which he estimated would probably be around $400 at least.

i told this to my buddy John who thought that was a LOT. he said i should consider just shipping it back to Terry Haines for the repair.

what do you guys think??:help:

You should get a hold of Terry Haines and see what he says. It might be cheaper or better in the long run to have him check it out.

I'd ship it back to Terry, He has after all the foremost expert on these Trannys. Hopefully shipping won't kill you($$)

Send it back to Terry. Unless hes raised his prices since I had my trans upgraded through him, he charges a flat fee that should be cheaper than $400. Im sure this other shop will tack on a few extra $$$ after they dig into it too.

Terry wont even look at it for less than 400! At least thats what he told me. Parts and labor will run you as much as your cobra guy.

Google: Liberty Gears

Had my Trans built there, and love it. So did rara

Gromet gone off the cable? I'd replace that cable end and see how the thing shifts. Might cost you $30. Seriously - you'll have to replace that anyway and you might as well give that a try first before you tear into it. Since Terry did your trans. once he may give you a break on a fresh set of syncros. It's worth asking.

Nope... been there, done that. He won't give you a break on anything that failed prematurely.

Liberty is where I go next. Anybody with knowlege can crack open your trans for a heck of alot cheaper. You would be stupid to waste all the money in shipping and pay terry all that money. I would just go with someone local who you trust and who knows what they are doing. The mtx 75 isn't rocket science.

I had mine done locally. Its been fine for 3 years.

I have never seen terry's work. I have tried out his transmissions though

Pud what did you have done at liberty's? andhow much did they charge you?

I would get it done localy. If you insist on shipping in to MI, go with Liberty. Terry will rape you a new one. Plus it might be a while before you get it back. Chances are you got recycled syncros installed the first time around. I wouldn't attempt to send it back to TH.

On another note, if you replace all the wear items in the trans, including shift forks, parts could cost around $400. The labor rate seems high if your supposedly getting a "deal".

Fwiw, Liberty charged me a flat $200 labor fee for the rebuild on my trans. I had some additional work done, that they charged more for (mikronite gear finishing), but a simple rebuild they quoted as $200+parts.

I had the Guts of a Terry Haines transmission put into a case that wasn't damaged. I assumed that it would just be a swap over. luckily Paul broke it down and checked it all out. (keep in mind this trans had about 1000 miles on it from the prior owner and was a fully spec'ed out TH special) Upon inspection he found 2 BAD syncros, and some damaged gears.

Paul took the good gear from the stock trans, and sold me two OEM take out syncros for a SONG. I was out the door for $325.

Mine is at Liberty now getting some goodies done to it :)

Good to hear bill, did he remember me or Rara?
