After a few hours the motor was ready to be pulled, we went from the top since we had the clearance and didnt want to risk busting the subframe bolts. *sigh.. Jeff*

Prepping for the new trans

I wish I would have gotten some pics of the inside of the old trans, that thing was MESSED up, 3rd gear shift fork was messed up, bearings were just falling out, but on the plus side, the diff was in really good shape. I only got a couple of pics as we were busy most of the time working on taking stuff apart/putting it together, plus I didnt want my dirty mitts all over my cell phone. Motor came out and went back in with very minor heart ach, I really dont think it could have been easier, especially when Gus showed up.

Thanks to everybody who showed up today, and thanks to mike for the kick ass BBQ, some great ribs and brats  let all of us know if you ever need anything again. I had a good time doing this today, being my first engine/trans pull I learned a lot about doing this work.

Edit: added bonus... Reebs changing my alternator. w00t! Thanks again for that :D

I had a good time. The swap went very well. You should have got some pics of all the cars parked all over the drive and off in the grass. :) We had quite a few people show up throughout the day to buy parts from me, eat some amazing food that Mike cooked up, and just enjoy one of the last nice days in Michigan before we freeze all winter!

Thanks to Grant for helping out and for helping me pull the motor and trans out of the parts car last Wendsday evening so that I could have the trans ready to drop in Mikes car. Thanks to mike for helping on his own car. :) Thanks to Jared for helping the whole time and getting those time consuming and frusterating little things done on the car. "Jared, finish taking this dang thing off, I am moving on." And a big thanks to Gus for swinging by today to help us finish up! You are by far one of the most knowlegeable CEG'ers I know. Thanks also to everyone else who came just for the food. :D (Alex!)

Ouchhhh.

What's the matter Alias, couldn't do your own alternator? :p j/kkkkk

You guys are hilarious! He did indeed work on a v6. And the only reason I helped him with his alternator is because he freaken broke down in my driveway when he came to buy parts. I had an exam for school the next morning and I spent hours driving from parts store to parts store trying to find a Zetec alt! We needed to get that done in a hurry! Didn't even get home with the alternator until after 10pm iirc!

I notice that many duratecs leak from under or around the power steering pump. Sometimes its the Pump leaking and sometimes its oil. Where does it come from timing cover gasket? If so why does it only leak in that spot?

do you mean in the 2nd pic on the passenger side of the motor?

thats the power steering pump, and it has a big leak there because when we were pulling the motor my hand swiped over the pulley and ran the pump a little bit, which spit a little bit of power steering fluid out down the side of the motor from the hose.

oh ok. Yea thats that I was talking about. Ive seen soem cars have oil leaks in that area, as mine does :(

to replace the trans you pulled the engine?

was a hell of a lot easier than doing it in car, plus with the way the engine and trans goes, you cant drop just the trans through the bottom, the subframe is too strange, and you cant just pull the trans out because the trans tucks under the frame of the car, its a weird setup, and the only way to pull the trans out the top is to remove the passenger side motor mount so that the motor can move about 2 inches to the left, which creates JUST enough space to inch the motor/trans out. its a slow process.

I didn't want to drop the subframe because the car had 170,000 plus miles and I tried backing out the subframe bolts to drop it and they were so seized I just decided to pull it from the top. It really doesn't take that long anyways. If all goes perfect, I believe dropping the subframe is quicker, but from my experience dropping the subframe to just pull the trans took a very long time due to some complications with the subframe bolts spinning when going back in. And Jared, I removed the lower half of the motor mount on the front of the engine (passengers side of the car) just to make it easier to sneak the motor out. I have left that mount on before so it can be done with it on. It can even be done with a DMD on the motor, but then it is really tight.

YOU SOUND LIKE A GOOBER

You sir are an retard!!!!!

Again stick to stuff you know about. Pulling the engine is stupid to replace the trans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How long did it take you to do this? I bet alot longer than 6 hours.

okay, you are right..

however with 170K on the car there was a high risk of the subframe bolts stripping, which would have added a lot of time and heartach to dropping it all through the bottom. It very well could have been done quicker if we had pulled it from the bottom, but really everything went so smoothly to pull it from the top.

You seriously need to know information before talking.

ok soo the nut free spins. cut hole in the floor, takes 3 mins. Get a pair of channel locks or a wrench and hold on to it. Done.

Its easy. The bolts won't strip. I would never pull the engine to do a trans Most pointless thing I have ever heard of in my life.

So in conclusion. Aliasjerk you need to stick to topics that you have even a little bit of knowledge on. Becuase again this isn't one of those topics.

It was my decision to pull it from the top because I am fast at it that way after doing this so many times. Jason doesn't know the whole story behind why I decided to pull it from the top. With his 170,000 mile car, we had a bunch of other stuff we needed to take car of and diagnose (ie oil leak, crossover tube, replace coolant, oil change, splicing the wiring harness, and more stuff than I can even begin to say). If I had a lift and the car had less miles on it and if it didn't need anything but a trans to be swapped, then maybe, maybe I would have dropped the subframe. Mike is happy, it went quick and most importantly it went as smooth as can be. That is all I care about. :D

And nothing is better than the pumping of the cherry picker handle. :) Mike was just jealous that I didn't let him do it. Look at his face in the corner!
