Could timing screwup the shifting of an automatic?

My girlfriend just had her waterpump replaced on her 98 Cav 2.4L. They also replaced the tensioner. Now when I jam on the gas it'll accel (poorly) up to 6rpm and then the tranny seems to float into la la land until I let off the gas a bit and then it shifts into second gear.

I wanna know if this is possible by timing or if its is a tranny situation.

TIA!!

well timing has nothing to do with the part that was replaced, the water pump is on the serpentine belt, and I believe the 2.4L is timing CHAIN driven. Which means if it jumped timing I would be highly impressed.

have you tried resetting the computer? is the CEL on?

You're right that the WP is on the belt. I should have said timing chain tensioner. The belt has a tensioner as well.

no CEL, and I didn't reset it no. the mech might have?

It sounds like a tranny situation. If you don't have a "OD off" light, I would suggest changing the tranny fluid (and filter) first and see if it improves. If you have the "OD off" light on or blinking, send it in for a tranny diagnosis.

Timing would affect automatic transmission shifting if said AT shifting was aided by engine vacuum. If the tranny has electronic shifting controls, it's more likely that something is wrong with the tranny and not the engine.

I'll let you know tonight. Apparently the timing chain tensioner is run by oil pressure. and when you first start the car up after replacing it, the teeth tend to jump out of sync. apparently the car will idle and run at slow speeds like normal. but when you dump the gas, it bogs and runs poorly.
