Okay... has anyone ever heard of a car sucking in a valve? A friend of mine has a 98 CSVT and he said he was told it sucked in a valve and the mottor needs to be replaced? anyone ever heard of that? Or what the cause could have been? I did a search but couldnt really find anything. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I don't think it was actually "sucked in". The valve spring probably broke, the valve keepers came off, resulting in the valve dropping in the combustion chamber. After that, the valve got in the way of the piston and "punched" a hole in the piston.

Any Idea what would cause that? Would that be a result of driving the car too hard? He also drove it around with the oil light on for a bit. I think thats what caused whatever to happen

oh well, if the oil light comes on in a contour, that pretty much means game over.

Agreed. Generally speaking, when you see the red oil light in any car, you're running the risk of damage.

Cars like the SHO that came equipped with orange check oil lights gave the owner enough advance warning that damage could be easily avoided. I believe those cars tripped the light at 3 quarts or so, about 2 quarts down.

agreed on the light. the sho had two oil lights, orange and red...red blinking light was the known as the blink of death.

Okay... He was told it happened over a long period of time due to someone driving it hard but he didnt drive it hard at all. H's just not too hot on the whole preventative maintenance thing. Thanks everyone.

I doubt its actually a valve that dropped first, more likely a rod bearing, which led to a broken rod and/or piston, which contacted the valve and caused the present level of damage. The valvetrain on the duratec is pretty robust.

However, there is a possibility that on an accidental downshift one could significantly over-rev the engine and float a valve causing significant damage.
