Strange Throttle Hang Issue

So obviously when I say strange I don't think its the usual throttle hang.
The background to this is that I was having some issues with my IAC so I cleaned it, and things are better but I think I still need to replace it (still idling around 1500 rpm from time to time).
What I'm concerned about is that if I am driving and put the clutch in, the revs climb to about 3500-4000 (with my foot off the accelerator for all you smart arses). It has on rare occasion done this from idle while sitting at lights but its usually when I'm in the range of 2500-3000 rpm.
I have experienced the normal throttle hang, but never had the rpms increase before going down.
On the way to work this morning I was thinking that this could be IAC related. Does the IAC fully open when the throttle is opened?

I had the same thing happen to me on my first SVT. My revs would climb when I pushed in the clutch and on occasion they would climb even when in gear and the car would accelerate even with my foot off the gas. After numerous IAC replacements (Under warranty) they finally replaced the Mass Air Sensor and claimed my K&N filter oil contaminated the MAS. I thought it was BS but put the factory filter back in and that issue never returned.

Ok just making sure, hope that fixes it for you man. And when you do your intake make sure its dry before putting it back on after re-charging the oil. I have a spare that I put on when I re-oil mine and I dont put it on for 3-4 days to make 100% sure its dry.

Thanks Ryan, good tips.

These IAC valves are wierd. I had all sorts of idle issues with mine. I cleaned it and it was worse....cleaned it again and it was fine for a few days....cleaned it again and lubed the little shaft inside this time with some white lithium and its been working great in fact perfect. Then someone gave me a freebie a ( New one ) they had bought for a car they scrapped....so I said, oh well and installed the new one....guess what?? the new one hangs like crazy in around 1500 - 2000 and takes for ever to stable out. Im thinking of putting my old one back on. Try giving it a good cleaning and soaking it in fuel injector cleaner...then blow it out with compressed air if you have access...then lube the inside. With my experience these IACS are a PITA.

I've had this exact issue several times with my car over the years. So far, the only thing that's worked for me is cleaning the throttle body. I do that, and the problem disappears for another 8,000 or 10,000 miles. No idea qwhy, but it works for me. And it's simple.

I'm having the same problem with mine right now....it's very intermittent. Sometimes the rpm's will drop when I turn the a/c ON, other times they go up even more. I'll hit the throttle a bit and it makes it even worse. I can let off the pedal and it still feels like the car is under acceleration. Just like a "stuck" throttle.

Thanks to all the previous suggestions, I hope they help in my case!!!!!

Ok, Just a quick report back. Over the weekend I had my engine bay detailed and that seemed to help things out a bit but it was still happening, just less frequently (who knows how that helped but whatever).
Anyway, last night I bought the CRC MAF cleaner from Kragen (advance in other states) and so far so good. It has been returning to 750rpm idle really well and no surging revs or anything like that.
I'd say problem fixed!

P.S. A tip for young players is that the MAF sensor is held in place by tamper proof T20 torx screws so if you don't have a driver pick one up while you're at the store.

two thoughts:

one: don't remove the maf sensor itself. spray through the MAF while still in the housing.

two: Throttle Hang symptoms INCLUDE raising revs before dropping, so technically, you were experiencing TH at its best(worst??) but nothing strange.

Glad it quit for you!

The instructions on the MAF Cleaner say to remove the sensor, being careful not to touch the wires. It does make it easy to give them a good blast and its a lot quicker than pulling the intake tube. Just BE CAREFUL not to touch the wires. :)

Edit: Oh, and I'm glad too. I'm hoping it will improve my fuel economy too, its been less than 20 MPG lately.

I mention leaving the sensor as the leads and sensor itself is VERY thin and VERY fragile..

it isn't even a matter of "ham-fisted" that will ruin it.. even the steady, easy person can overdo it without even coming close to realizing it.
