Steering system moans when wheel turned to left

Thread title says it all. Speed/rpm not a factor. If I turn the wheel to the left, the steering system makes a loud moaning noise. General concensus is that there's a seal somewhere in the system letting air in, either in the pump or the rack. Has anyone encountered this in the past? I'd like to know what to expect before I start digging. Thanks!

Start by making sure PS Fluid level is not low. Then if it is fine, flush PS Fluid by turkeybaster method.

1) Remove PS fluid with turkey baster
2) Fill with new fluid.
3) Drive for a few days
4) Repeat (Steps 1 to 3) two more times.

Also make sure serpentine belt is not loose, i.e., belt tensioner is not worn out.

Steering Moan...

Steering Moan...

My experience: low power steering fluid...top off the fluid and listen for it then. My leak was under the R&P boot [passenger side] and once the leak has started it will just progressively get worse. [Feel the boot, it should be dry. If you feel fluid you are in trouble as there is no way to service the seals within the unit.] I ended up replacing the R&P assembly, which is a MAJOR :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: but doable. The re-man R&P for an SVT was around 200 or so...just make sure it is for the correct wheel size...16" for the SVT. If you need it, I'd be glad to give you pointers. ALLData and Haynes helped me a lot. BUT by all means check the hoses, etc. hopefully your leak is there.

when i got my car in march the rack was dead and i had no power steering at all. i got a new rack from advanced for about $170 and now im getting that noise also it seemed to start after i disconnected my ps lines when replacing clutch. all i can think is that there is air in the lines but i would think it would have pushed the air out of the lines by now.

Have you tried bleeding the lines?

With the car running, take the cap off of the PS fluid containter... Then repeatedly turn the wheel from lock to lock, I do it several times... Make sure that you do not hold it at lock though because that will eventually ruin the PS pump...

your not holding the wheel against the steering stop are you? that will often cause the ps pump to moan. you shoud never hold the wheel at full lock as it isn't good for the pump.
