Spoilers Effect?

It's all good and well that you can prove that a spoiler can be designed to make a significant change to handling on a FWD car, but the OP asked about the factory installed spoiler on a Contique vs no spoiler.

I'd really hate to think any of you believe that those spoilers from Ford are for anything but aesthetics.

Without seeing data from Ford on Wind Tunnel testing I can not say whether the spoiler on the Contiques provide any benefit other than asethtics.

Unless that data is found and published the only statements for or against a benefit will be speculative opinions.

I will say this, as ugly as my wing is, taking corners at a high rate of speed, such as entering interstate, leaving interstate, spiritly driving the paved unamnned back roads where i live, the car feels alot more stable with the mirko and wing installed then without them! Might be in my head, but im not the only person to say it!

I second that. My car with the touring wing, felt much more stable at "70 mph" ;) during spirited drives on the highway.

the mirko is a functional splitter. adding surface area to the front fot eh car to get air over the car instead of under it. as for the rear spoiler on the contours... it is NOT functional! in order for a spoiler to be functional air has to flow over it in significant amounts. the spoiler would have to be about 6 inches or more above the rear deck in order to even get enough air to provide functional downforce. it would also need to have a slightly more aggressive design to create usefull downforce rather than a bunch of drag. honestly the rear spoiler does nothing more than add good looking weight on the back of the car. if you want to really argue aerodynamics in order for drafting (using the hole punched in the air from one car to pull along another) to function at least 50-60 mph are required for an average car to even notice its effects. at about 100mph one may yes i said MAY notice the pull from drafting.

I am not going to argue that the spoiler on the svt that comes from teh factory is basically for appearance, but the touring wing definitely makes a difference!
