My girlfriend was driving to work the other morning, and the speedometer stopped working. She said it was working fine, but she had to stop at a light, and when she went to take off, she noticed it wasn't working anymore. I've had this happen before. I just had a bad connection in the fuse box. I checked all the fuses. Nothing wrong with them, so I just decided to change them all out (you never know, right?) Nothing worked. I have yet to check the VSS, which I know I should have before I made the thread, but I was wanting to know if the VSS would just fail like this? Could there be any other reasons to Speedometer failure? Cruise doesn't work, and I'm thinking the fuel gauge MAY have stopped working too, but I have yet to check that. (Fillin' the tank up today, since it's on 1/4, should tell me whether or not it's working.)

Automatic or Manual transmission.

If automatic, is the "O/D off" light on? If on, get the CEL code read. If P0500, the VSS is broken.

If Manual and nothing else seems to be the issue, then it could be the VSS or instrument cluster.

No lights, or codes. It's an ATX.

also, recheck all connections at the fuse box, jiggle the wires and whatnot.

I have been checking them quite a bit, but have to to wade through them all.

The fuel gauge is working, so I would say it's the VSS. I'll have to pick one up tomorrow most likely.

just went through this with my mtx, the fuel gauge and speedo stopped, pulled the cluster out, pushed the right side connection back in and presto.

Luckily I didn't have to do that... Turns out it was a fuse, it just wasn't getting a great contact. It seemed like it did, it would take some pressure to get it out. Anyway, it was the fuse for the brake lights, so I wonder how long I've been bein' an ass to people and braking when they're not expecting it...

Snap the trip odometer stem with your finger while moving and see if it works after that. Sometimes just resetting it gets it going.
