Speedo & Odo stopped...HELP

Well 2 days ago my blinkers stopped working, they would click twice then stop, didn't think anything of it other than a fuse, no time to check due to work and school, I'm gettin on that today. The real issue is that on my to lansing for school last night my Speedo stopped working, it stopped at 80 and hung at it for 5 minutes, as well as both of the odo's. I tapped on the plastic and a minute later, the arm dropped, another min later they worked again the duration of my way to lansing. Then it did it again for a minute or so on my way home. Whats the deal here?

Sounds like the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is acting up. Do you know if the shop used the "unknown" VSS from the used junkyard trans or did they pull anything off your old trans?

I have no idea exactly what they did when they put the new trans in. How much would a new VSS cost? Something I could do or take it in or whaaaaaat?

I'll check my battery condition in a bit, once I get this reading done.

OK, I have this problem too, and

OK, I have this problem too, and

I have this problem intermittently and have been living with it.

1Q -- is your fuel gauge working, or not working when your speedo/odo are out. Fuel
gauge has nothing to do with VSS, but has a lot to do with electrical system.

2Q -- How is the tach. Mine works fine.

3Q to the contour.org wise -- Do they have seperate sensor units for RPM and axle speed?
If not, then one would expect a VSS failure to bring down the tach as well.

4Q -- try your cruise control and see if you can make it operate. Mine works.

I'm thinking it's electrical. However, I haven't fixed mine -- I dove into it once, but found no "smoking gun".

The comment about the battery intrigues me. I had my battery pretty run down last winter (leaving headlights on) when this all started.

A1--As far as I know my gas gauge was working  It didn't drop or anything.

A2--RPM tach works perfectly fine

A3--not for me

A4--The cruise was on when all this happened.

I did notice that when the stuff stopped working my low fuel light came on then off.

that is a classic sign of the instrument cluster failing iirc ... well when my cluster would cut out and stop working the fuel light would often come on and off, along with the airbag lights ...

also I had an instance where the speedo would jump around when I was stopped.

part of this was low voltage and part of it could have been the summer heat as I haven't had the cluster cut out in the heat of the summer and its been cooler recently ...

Update, entire way home yesterday my airbag light was blinking at me.

Do post number 3 and report the results.

how is the battery/voltage in the car? low voltage can cause the guages to act up.

I have had the ABS light come on when one of the cells in my battery started going bad. About a week later, the battery died.

hello.........i had kinda the same thing happen to me and still haven't had time to check it out but the only thing mine is doing is the speedometer keeps jumping around when im at a stop light and it gives crazy reading saying im going 80 when im only going like 40 or it stays at 0 sometimes............ but then other days it works well for a little while?? i thought it might be a relay or something..:confused:

If your battery is fine, then it is the Vehicle Speed Sensor, its connector or its associated wiring.

Do you have an automatic? If your "OD Off" light starts flashing, you need to change the VSS soon thereafter. Within 50 miles or so, the ATFluid will be worned out. That is the last thing you want.

Edit Post 13 has picture for Zetec VSS.
