Alright, I know the sleeperz has made his own intake setup, and you can call this what you will. I have named it the "Sleeper Intake". First I'm going to name the benefits and downside to this upgrade.
I have had a CAI mounted on my car for a couple of years as well as a Sleeper Z intake. The Sleeper Z intake was a nice improvement, but I noticed a lack of mid range power (From 3,000 to 5,000 rpm) I realize that everyone's experience is differant as not every car is the exact same.
Now when I had the CAI, I had no low end torque as in takeoff, but I had a load of high end power. also, I hated how the rubber coupler that came with it didn't fit the throttle body.
I made this with junkyard parts and one trip to the autoparts store seeing as how I didn't exactly have the OEM intake anymore. I do have a lot of low end torque and quite a bit of high end power with this as well. Also, it's cheaper.
What you need:
1. OEM intake
2. If you have a pre 98, go to your local salvage yard and get a intake tube from a 98^.
3.go to the autozone with $10.00 and but a flexible intake tube (looks a bit like a dryer hose)
now bear with me as all of these pics were taken with a cell phone.
step 1: Using the 3"flexible tubing as a stencil, cut a circle out of the Air Box where the air normally flows in as well as cutting out the lip around it.

Step 2: Make a block off plate. You can use pretty much any material, I work around prosthetics, so I used a scrap peice of plastic called Vivac that we use for test sockets. and you can paint this to match the box if you want.

Step 3:Using epoxy and RTV, put the block off plate on the air box.

Step 4: I don't have a picture of this, but you can see in the finished pics, put the flexible hose through the fender. It's a bit difficult, but the fuse box will go back into place.
End result

I wanna try this now. Do you have any suggestions as for what materials I can use to make the block off plate?

I already have the flex tube in my ghetto set-up

nice job. If you run that flex pipe down to the front fender and connect it to a forward facing air scoop, you will be pleasantly surprised at your cruising speed throttle response...G.

If you really want to pursue that route, then why don't you make a box to fit around the bottom of yours with a hole to fit your MAF,... Plexiglas or some other heat formable plastic? go to a hobby shop and buy some foam to make the mold to pull it around. also, you may want to consider getting a pair of vise grips and pulling out those bolts on both sides of the TB.

And the thing with the stickers doesn't really hint that I have a rendition of a CAI, it simply suggests what you can see along with a K&N air filter.

$100 bucks says that intake loses HP on a dyno.

The accordion tubing acts as a resonator, not only does it kill sound it kills top end power like no other.

My advice is pick up a ebay Accord v6 intake. You could definitely do some good with that, just gotta have a hack saw. They are only like $40 shipped too.

That is BRIGHT!

99 Mystiqe ATX posted a pic of this in the Pics/Vids section. It's quite ugly

The one I have was $30 shipped. No cutting involved. Just search for "Focus intake" on e-bay. Typically the "SOHC" labeled intakes are better from what I have searched.

It sure is, I still haven't installed it... Waiting for one of my car buddies whose out of town currently to come back so we can install it amongst a few other projects... ;)

Plus, it's been WAY too cold to work on the car... :(

If anyone wants any pics or anything of it just let me know... For the $21 shipped quality is pretty good... Can't wait to get it on... :)

I appreciate the bet, but all of the piping is larger than the CAI piping (CAI=2.75" Accordian type thingy=3.0"). Plus from what I've experienced, the plenum has helped with throttle response. From what I"ve experienced, to each his own. and I would love to dyno it and find out which is better, but I don't have a Dyno nearby.
The way I HAVE tested it is by getting on the interstate, it takes longer to get up to speed with the CAI on than it does with my custom intake.

Got my intake installed. Went decent, had to really stretch on the filter and the coupler that goes on the TB. Other than that not bad.

Seat of the pants dyno says it pulls a little better and throttle response is better as well. Hopefully mileage improves a little bit. Judging by the better throttle response while cruising at 60 it should be a little better. May not be noticeable though, we'll see. FWIW, my previous tank yielded 31.8mpg...
