Should I keep what I have or "upgrade"?

Ok.. guide lines.. UHm lol i would like 12's or large size sqaures. would like 2 subs. Would like to make the bystanders ears explode with quality. I know i will need a nice amp. Don't know any brands at all so help there please. If you need to know any thing else just post so i can help you help me.

I have heard some solobaric kicker square speakers and that was probably the best I have heard in a 8" ever. I can't imagine what a 10-12" sounds in those:eek:.

But you said you dont care what others think right? So do you want this to be for Sound quality or SPL (volume)? A quality single 12" should give you enough of both to be happy. But if your only after turning heads 1/4mi away its a different story.
Also, are we only talking amp and subs here? or are you upgrading speakers and head unit as well?
Last question, do you or anybody close to you have any carpentry tools/skills? A custom made box will blow away a pre-fab box anyday. Every sub has its own set of enclosure specs, and the whole key to getting good sound is to have a box that will work perfectly with the sub.

^ so true - you need to decide. I would say one 12" sub with custom built box to the required specs. One mono amp with appropriate power/grounds and you will have enough to knock the rust off your car you didn't even know it had. Probably get all this for about 1/2-3/4 the price you wanted to spend.

I don't know why you just said this, you can't be serious, The enclosure has 10x more to do with how a speaker sounds than the speaker/sub itself. especially if your talking about door speakers in a Contour since the Contour is one of the worst engineered cars for factory audio locations. MTX is not a bad brand. Sure there's better stuff out there for more $$, but that doesn't mean MTX blows.

Well I like low low bass, so show me an MTX 10" that hits below 40hz, go ahead I'll wait. Its even hard to find any MTX that hits below 25hz for a decent ticket. My $70 Power Acoustik had a bigger magnet than all but the highest end MTX models. I stand by my statement.

you stand by your statement saying your door speakers hit lower than half of MTX subs?
please describe "hits below 40hz" Just about any sub will "hit below 40hz" it all depends on the enclosure and how its tuned. Are you talking about the Fs measurement (free air)? if so all but the 4500 series MTX will do it. Or are you talking frequency response? because if thats the case, EVERY MTX goes below 40hz so whats your point? Didn't take me long to find one did it?:blackeye:
The human ear can barely hear 25hz, so why would you be so worried about producing it. A box tuned to 40hz should have no problem producing 25hz.
Magnet size? a stonger magnet = more efficiency. Notice how I said stronger... Not all magnets are created equal. There are many different magnet materials used in the industry. So your cheap power acoustik sub could have had a magnet twice as large as another brand, but it was only half as strong.

Should have said I stand by my statement that imo MTX subs are junk. Not saying the PA was good but it hit pretty hard for how much I paid for it and only seeing half its rated rms. Why are MTX frequency responses so high? Does that not have something to do with how low it will go? My Solo Classic is rated down to 20hz and goes that low when I play a 20hz-20khz sweep.

Edit- What Im trying to say is MTX subs seem to lack the low end that rap songs have. My PA was rated to down to 30Hz with a Fs of 24.8Hz and the Solo Classic is rated to 20Hz with a Fs of 26Hz and the Solo is able to hit lower notes than the PA ever could.

No i don't care what others think. But i thought if there ears exploded mine would be like a nuke if that makes any sense lol. I would like a nice mixture of quality and i would like to wake some people up as well. (If i go to comps i would like others to hear it then) And i only need subs amp and a better cap/battery. And yes my dad is a electrician but has made god knows how many decks/sheds/houses so i think i got the carpenter part covered. I would like to 2 subs if i can afford 2 of the ones you say. And you could give or take about 200 so 1700 is not that much of a problem. Buts that's about as high as i would LIKE to go. But allways open for other prices. I think i answered all the Q's asked.

If you really want square woofers get Kicker L7s and run 750-1000rms to each. For the bang for the buck go with Kicker woofers. Their amps are also very under rated but a bit pricey.

It does not matter whether they are square or round i really don't care its just that the ones i heard at Custom Sounds were square.

Does every one agree with Steel? That's what i originally wanted but was told the MTX were better.

Never owned one, nor heard one in person, so can't say.

I've owned JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate, MTX Blue Thunder and Road Thunder, Infinity Kappa, and my wife currently has a Lanzar (Her choice, not mine )

My personal preferences are the JL and the Infinity. The MTX's were old schools, they sounded good, too. Don't know how newer versions sound. While I snap on my wife's Lanzar, it does sound much better than it has any right to.

Yes, i did, but he was askin' about their subs.

Now that I think about it, my wife's cousin had Kickers in his car, but that's not a fair trial. He always bought good equipment, then fugged with his settings so it shook car to pieces. Don't think he could even spell SQ, so I'm still withholding my opinion.

So you recommend kickers if i can get a good deal? And what kind of amp should i get? Given that i get 2 kicker L7's. Also what would be a good deal for say slightly used or brand new ones?

Oh and getsome111 are you really a pirate reenactor only 200 years late?
Cause my family does pirate re-enactment.

the issue with Kicker squares is for them to have any SQ at all they either need to be sealed (costing you a bit in SPL) or ported in a box the size of a small refrigerator. There are much better options in that price range IMO.

Hey Getsum -- which Lanzar(s)? Driven with what? Enclosed in what? I have a single Opti1232D getting a kw in 2.8cf tuned to 28 and it's well worth its $150.
